Target size missed by 40%

Hi,

I am trying to do some backups of my DS9 DVDs. Most episodes just encode fine, but others are getting much bigger than definded.

I am using latest XVid beta with gmc, qpel, b-frames. My targeted filesize is 490 MB. But the lastest episode I tried ended in 687 MB.
If I turn b-frames off, the encoding is just fine.

I tried to set max consecutive bvops to 2 but no better result.

What might be wrong? I usually use Gordian Knot, but "manual" encoding via VirtualDub gives the same result.


Any hints?

try setting min quant to "2"
Iirc it;s under the advanced option in vdub
I'm not to fammiral with it though
or would could try playing with rate control; however I wouldn't reamend it

Whats so amazing about that? That's barely over 1000 kbit/sec for the video (assuming the audio is CBR 128kbit).

I guess he didn't take into account that Star Trek episodes, unlike most anime series, are about 45 minutes long... :D

42-45min :P :)

I use 350MB for my file size (or 348MB as windows reports), either way, they turn out great at that size, and 350MB seems to be the standard for a 40-45min TV show.

350 MB seems to be the size "designed" to fit the CD as the archive-medium.
But I am going for DVD (ISO) so 350 MB doesn't make sense.
As I am leaving the audio (german) untouched (448 kbit) and take english (128 kbit) as a second audio-track, 490 MB isn't too much, say 1000 kbit/s vor video.

Well, 353.000 kBytes per episode do make sense when going for DVD - that allows you to put 13 episodes (i.e. half a 26 ep season) on one DVD, and that's why I'm doing this... :D

Ummm... No, you can't fit a 26 Episode season on 2 DVDs encoding to 350MB... your thinking of the typical 24 Episode season that most other shows use.

350MB x 13 = 4550
DVD ISO (single layer) only holds like 4250'ish.

Don't forget that advertisers say 4.4GB, however, they use 1000MB per GB, not 1024MB like it should be.

Nope. Advertisers of course say 4.7GB per disc, which means 4700000000 bytes in total; those 4.7*10^9 bytes divided by 13 give 361597400 bytes per episode, which, when divided by the "proper" divisor of 1024, gives 353122 kBytes or a bit more than 344 MBytes per episode - and I said 353000 kBytes, which is easier to remember and gives a bit of breathing room on the disc.

Believe me, I've done my maths... ;) And I never said I was going for 350MB - I gave my file size in kilobytes, if you look closely...

(Okay, Nero gave me 4483 MB or 47000766208 bytes for the DVD+R I just had a look at, but I'm nitpicky enough already... :D)

Sorry, I was doing what the companies do, 350MB (so 350000Kbytes) using 1000KB :)
344MB (the real one) will fit :)
