video : you're messing up mp4 and avc. AVC is quite well supported by ffmpeg / ffdshow ( it misses high profile, which nero doesn't have either, and interlacing support, which no encoder support yet ). mp4 produced by recode are only supported by showtime, but that is another (sad) story and in no way related to avc.

Okay You're right I wasn't so precise. I and people near me are using the term AVC for mpeg4 encapsulated movies having AAC for audio and AVC for video.
Recode's output is playable by mplayer (expect vobsubs) and playable by apple's quicktime /Tiger edition/ (expect vobsubs).
Regarding interlace:
a) you can deinterlace if you prefer it
b) there are ceratin filters what can restore progressive 50fps or 60fps progressive frame rates using interpolation techniques such as Tom Barry's frame Dbl filter

Elias : Seriously, what are you talking about? The MP4 produced by Nero can only be used to the full extent of their capabilities by Showtime, because no other players support their subtitles format and / or chapters, and because newest ShowTime DirectShow filters are restricted to ShowTime only.
The MP4 can be read by other players, but without subtitles and / or chapters.

But many people want to play their interlaced video on their TV. In that case, interlaced ought to be preserved, because simply deinterlace it will make the motion slightly jerky, and restore it to 60 fps progressive will make the encoding less efficient than keeping it interlaced, without bringing any quality. Also, it will stress some more the decoder.

That's wrong. I'm currently using the nero decoder in MPC and subtitles (vobsubs) and chapters are perfectly working.

Sharktooth : OK, my bad, i wasn't aware that haali's mkv splitter was able to handle mp4 streams ( heck, the thread concerning that splitter is still named alternative matroska splitter ). I didn't even know that HDX4 came with a MP4 parser. Yet, I am right for chapter, am I not ?
Edit : so i'm wrong for chapter too. What filter did you use ?

I used nero filters for both mp4 parsing (splitting) and decoding.

The latest. But it always worked.
Ensure you have only nero codecs in the video filter filter chain (reads: disable FFDShow raw support).

You MUST use only nero filters or bye bye chapters, subtitles and AR correction (it does it twice if ffdshow is enabled)...

bond, just disable h264 and raw image support in ffdshow. it works like a charme.

and btw ffdshow can already decode vobsubs (like gabests vsfilter) and do anamorphic aspect ratio correction

subs and chaps are handled both by nero mp4 splitter and decoder so they should be used together.
Actually there's no other way to play them back.

Sharktooth, can you also try whether .mp4 files with multiple audio streams are supported in MPC with the nero filters (meaning does MPC let you switch the two audio streams?)
splitted from other thread

Well... all I have are the newest Nero's MP4 filters installed.
However, I'm still unable to access NeroDigital's subtitle and multiple audio tracks using MediaPlayer Classic.
NeroDigital's chapter points work fine though... they always have!
Cheers

Sharktooth I'm a little bit envy :) i've problems with pb of nd mp4 stuff, too. WMP10 plays at the rate of one third both audio and video. wmp6.4 is suffering from the same sympthom until I go to file>properties>special>nero digital audio decoder and change the audio setup to 2 speakers, stereo.. and there are no vobsub subtitles, too.
Showtime, however does the blues well...
