Windows Media Player Died...

I know that Doom9 really is not the place for this post, but I don't kno any forums nearly as knowledgable about computer stuff as this forum, so admins please don't delete this. Ok I use Windows Media Player 9 for most video playback. Now all of the sudden it died. What I mean is every time I open a video in it and goto fullscreen it freezes, then it closes out to windowed mode. At first I thought maybe it was an error in the video. Nope, nor was it an error in my codecs. Divx Player and BS Player work fine. I tried reinstalling WMP and nothing. I also tried disableing video overlay in WMP, nothing. I have no clue what is going on. Anyone ever heared of a problem like this? Thanks in advance for any hlep on this topic.

Ahh, your mind has been taken over by the poultry programmers at M$. I don't know why you'd use Windows Media Player anyway, as it's quite clear that Media Player Classic (search the doom9 pages) is so much better, and it doesn't crash as often as WMP does. On a more serious note, is it WMP 9 or 10 you are using? WMP 9 is well known for locking up intermittently, especially on Win98 systems. I don't have Windows XP, so can't try WMP10. Your best bet is to use Media Player Classic, not the one that comes bundled with Windows.

Hey guys and gals, come on. So he's using some crappy bundled M$ software that comes with Windows. So he hasn't got the update already for them. So he uses M$ software. BIG SODDING DEAL. £10 bets you all use some form of Microsoft software on your kickass PCs. I do and I'm not ashamed to admit it. (Though I do keep a couple of different Linux distributions in case Windows 98 dies completely.)

Sorry, but it kinda drives me nuts when somebody tries to post a reasonable problem, and gives it very vaguely. We are here to help each other, not put each other down.


Back on topic, most M$ software will fail at least once in a blue moon. Try uninstalling it and reinstalling it. It's a god given right that every piece of software Microsoft ever released will crash of it's own accord at least once in it's lifetime.

Name me one that hasn't please?

PS, I bash Microsoft more than occasionally, but only to get the anger out of my system.

I think if you remove MS from that sentence it still would hold. :)

Re-installing DirectX might indeed be something worth trying.

I use windows media player 9 because it is the fastest on my system, and you can read every file except of course apples files, which I hate anyway. I seriously love WMP 10 on XP for 1 reason, a silly reason. You can minimize it to the windows startbar and it can be accessed from there. It's a pretty cool feature. I will try reinstalling Direct X, Then WMP 9 Again.

You know, everything you said above applies to Media Player Classic as well. It can even be used to play Quicktime and RealMedia and Shockwave.

Less bloat, more formats and standards, clean interface. What more could you ask for?

Just TRY and uninstall Windoze Media Player if you are using XP or XP Pro (like I am), there is not even an option. Same with the other crap like Movie Maker, it's in there to stay, Micro$oft were even taken to court over it, remember?

Seriously, use media player classic, a much much better player!

Yeah Media Player classic is nice, and I could always use BSPlayer too. Still Neither do the thing where you can goto the start bar, which owns!!!!, but still not that big of a deal. I can live without WMP, but I still would like to figure out why all the sudden it is doing this. I tried reinstalling Direct X and WMP, nothing. The only other thing I can even think of is my GCard drivers... but I think it it just WMP 9 and that when I uninstall it, it realy is not uninstalling EVERYTHING, if you know what I mean.

Ok what in the heck, Microsoft is retarted. I fixed it... kinda. Everytime I open a video I have to goto tools-->options-->performance-->advanced then change something (anything). Apply it, then restore defaults and that fixes it..... What the $%#* is that... See uninstalling WMP and reinstalling it should fix problems with the play.... but it doesn't because it doesn't completly uninstall. I know that because when I reinstall it it still saves the skin I had on before I uninstalled it. Microsoft it stupid.

Update:
Fixed it, I had to goto alot of site to find all the crappy registry keys and stuff, but once I uninstalled it all and reinstalled it, it fixed it. DIE MICROSOFT DIE!!!!

execpt with IE and outlook express
and I know of hte regitsy keys that you;re atlking aobut
thats how I dlelted wmp and movie maker once

It may be physically "your" system. It may be taking up "your" physical desk space. But physical is as far as it goes. By installing Windows your system becomes virtually theirs. The EULA is more restrictive than you might think. You should read it some time. You waive all sorts of rights. Like the right to hold Microsoft if and when their products dammage your system. Which has and will happen from time to time. But don't go whining to Microsoft. It's not like you paid for Windows. Right?

my idea of switching came from hte fact that they provide nearly no user support and what they do is servly criped to the point were thye seem to want you buy another verstion of windows to make suer it isn;t a coorupt disk

Care to explain this a bit more? Do you mean the Task Tray?

Media Player Classic:

Tools -> View -> Options -> Player -> Put a check by 'Tray Icon'

P.S. I believe you mean to say 'Task Bar' not start bar. I think I found the feature. Kinda neat with the controls but eats up space on the task bar which isn't cool.

Nah, thats not what I am talking about. Ok on windows media player 10, you can minimize the player, then the task bar creates a controller in itself, you can play just music from that, or you can have a video pop up from it, bit it is all connected to the task bar.
