Hi, i noticed DVD-rb now has a new matrix feature in it. Being one to always look for the best quailty encode i was hoping people could list reccomendations for the best matrices to use, in my case with CCE 2.67, for all settings(main feature, low bitrate, very low bitrate and matrix for extras). i'm especially interested in knowing what's best for episode DVDs. to start things off, at the moment i am using encoder default for lack of better knowledge.
peace out Alex.

hmm. i guess everyone must just use the encoder default. interesting....

try some out with different types of dvds and decide for yourself which you prefer for what. for something like a tv series where the bitrate may be low once recompressed a lower bitrate matrix may give better results. thats up to your personal taste to decide though.

I've finished a Matrix Editor where I included some extra Matrices.
When you run the Editor you'll be able to access some important information about each Matrix available (by the way... dragongodz it would be nice if you give me some more detailed information about your QLB :)) that may help you to choose the best for your case.
As I said... it's finished but its waiting for jdobbs final tests and approval :)... maybe it will be released today :)
keep it UP

actually i plan to release an updated/tweaked version of the matrix. should be tommorow(too late to do it tonight). so i will start a thread in the other mpeg1/2 encoder section with it and details etc.

Just a minor question, I noticed that mpeg standard matrix of dvd-rb as all values of 16 at non-intra matrix while hc encoder has different values, why?
I haven't tried the matrix with non-intra 16's.
From my little test with interlaced source and average bitrate of 4200kb, I found better matrix (from the matrix selection of hc) while retaining details, the mpeg standard (as in hc) and qlb, hc was good but a little noisier. Good work dragongodz. I have to try qlb with lower bitrate.
Btw what is the matrix used by cce 2.5 (which doesn't take any custom matrix's)?

I suppose CCE2.5 uses the CCE standard matrix.

My current favorite is Jawars 1CD matrix. It was originally for DivX to fit an entire movie (LOTR I think) on 1 CD. Based on the thread I found where he was designing and testing it, I have tried it on several DVDs. I was able to get movies encoded at about 3250 kbps VBR in CCE and the image was no different to my eyes from the original that was encoded at 5800+
Here is the thread where I discovered it:

Using this matrix and a Priority setting of 10-12 on CCE, I get no mosquito noise, no visible banding, and incredible detail in explosions, CGI graphics, and general action sequences.

That's why there will be the editor... so you can use every matrix you like :)

I've included on the editor a matrix called "Jawor's 1CD Quantization Matrix"... is this the one you are refering to?
@onesoul
I've tried to load an ecl on cce2.50 with a matrix inserted and I didn't get any errors... but I can't say that it made any effect.

You can check the matrix in the encoded file by using ReStream.

Rockas,
That is the exact matrix I am referring to. Thanks for including it!!
So will the next RB version have a built-in matrix editor? Will it remmember the matrix from one encoding session to the next?
Right now, I am using v. 79 and have set my CCE standard template to Jawor's hoping the RB will pick it up, but not sure.
Boulder, I have never used restream. How do I check the matrix with it?

The editor is an independent application... still waiting for jdobbs green light :(

No Rebuilder won't pick it up :)

But if you rename any matrix you like as Standard.txt (or the name RB uses) and replace the one that came with RB 0.79 and that is in the matrix sub folder of RB, wouldn't RB pick it as the standard?

What's the point on doing that? if you have 0.79 you just need to pick the matrix you want to use.
The Editor will be released so users can create new matrices or edit existing ones... I also added some information about each one that may be usefull when it comes to choose each one to use.

those interested can help decide if the updated QLB matrix is to live or to die. all feedback welcome in the following thread
