The difference of quality video is edifying.
When I think that some players of Divx want to promote this format, I am disappointed. :(

Try the version 4.0.301.11 of Sorenson Squeeze + the update; and you will see.
This program also permits functions advanced in HD, WMV9 HD, Quicktime HD, RV10 HD and MPEG2 HD (but in one pass to 25400 kbps).

Note: Reassure yourselves I made only a test in Mpeg-4.

I bought Sorenson Squeeze 4 when it first came out and it was way slow and the quality was horrible. Have they since updated and made quality improvements?

I just checked their site and I still have the most current version. I did a side by side test in January with Squeeze 4 and Nero AVC and Nero not only won in speed but quality as well.

Could you actually post some screenshots, clips, metrics, or anything to prove this? Just saying that something is better without providing any visual proof but your word doesn't mean much. I've tested the two myself and agree with everyone else that Nero is far superior. You're gonna have to provide something a bit more substantial to back up your claims if you want anyone to come to your side.

When I last tested Sorenson codec it was nowhere near as good as Recode2...

It could not even generate encodes correctly from an Mpeg2 source!

Bus only VLC is capable to read the Mp4 file of Sorenson. If you have an idea, I would be interested.

It shouldn't be. Using ffdshow you should be able to play it in any media player. Use something like MPC which has a capture frame function.

MPC has capture frame and go to frame functions.
BTW, in seldom situations they are not working with specific decoder, crashing MPC. Solution: do not use any shit that crash MPC ever... :D

If it is an AVC video in mpeg4 container this is a bullshit. Unless this Sorenson produce non-compliant streams...

BTW, which CPU is needed to play 1080i AVC ? Can it be played realtime now ?

Here is Sorenson AVC Encoded (http://scorpio1.homeip.net:6970/images/S1.mp4) (30 sec clip @ 2.9MB using @baseline profile only) which I did. Have a look if this interest you.

BTW, you can play back on any DShow Player (MPC, BSPlayer) using Nero (Recode) Decoder. Sure you can also play this on Nero Showtime as well. There is somehow some problem with playback on VLC and also OSMO ... it might have something to do with image size or aspect ratio i guess.

Note: If you have ffdshow install as well as Nero Recode ... then you need h264 disable on ffdshow, otherwise you have problem playback on MPC and BSPlayer.

Have a look if this interest you.hm osmo4 shows the typical "320x240 resolution signalled somewhere in the file" problem which is normally caused by some crappy .mp4 writers not updated to the latest mp4 specs (eg some mpeg-4 cams)

strange but ffdshow also shows a strange resolution before it crashes in graphedit (its the same, no matter if haalis or nero parser is used)

mplayer and vlc, which also use the ffmpeg avc decoder, work fine here

what exactly is "ffmpeg avc decoder" .... where do I get that. The vlc player which I download and install exhibits the same behaviour as that of OSMO.

about your problem with videolan and osmo4: can you describe it?

make sure you use the latest source of you players, eg search for videolan nightly builds or check celtic_druids site

To your question:-

For VLC ... it plays back as 4:3 AR. However when I change the setting under preference --> General --> Video --> Source Aspect Ratio to a value of 1. The movie now plays proper.

As for OSMO (v0.2.3), I made a mistake in my description ... it plays back proper, but it crops from the centre and only show a portion of the movie. Here is a sample of the screen shot.
screen shot (http://scorpio1.homeip.net:6970/images/OSMO.jpg). I don't normally use OSMO .... so I have limited knowledge [probably zero] on its working.

Had it fixed with OSMO, I had to replace the entry in GPAC.cfg for the following line from
video/mp4="mp4 mpg4" "MPEG-4 Movies" GPAC IsoMedia Reader
to
video/mp4="mp4 mpg4" "H.264 AVC (FFMPEG)" FFMPEG Demuxer
