Nero 6 slows down Windows Explorer

I don't know why, but for some reason, after I've installed the Nero 6 package, along with Nero Vision Express package... it takes at least 5 seconds to open a folder in Windows Explorer... and mostly even longer than that. I don't get it why. Without it, a folder in Windows Explorer takes less than a second to open. And it's like this with EVERY folder! This happens after every clean install of Windows XP (and I do them a lot). Every time, without fail.

Oh my god! thank you! I have the same issue, and it was driving me insane. 5 seconds to browse a folder from the explorer.exe shell. I scanned for viruses, spyware, nothing. Even suspected that my hdd or ide cables were borked... then I realized the issue doesn't exist with other shells (for example through a "open file..." browsing from within a program".

Now I saw your post and uninstalled NVE 3.1.0.0 and the issue is gone! without a restart! thanks for giving me back my sanity. I suspected it was some sort of "file preview" function but never thought it would be related to nero. in my experience, the latest nero software has been quite a buggy headache...

Hehe, you're welcome, glad I could be of help :) Actually, I just discovered that it was Nero's fault. I'd installed XP and finally it was working as it should, no slow browser or anything. Then I install Nero and I discovered that everything went slow in Windows Explorer. Pissed me off royally I can tell you that, all the while I thought something was wrong with XP and this cost me several format C: which takes at least one hour every time...

hope it may help your explorerWhat will that do? How will it affect Nero Digital/Nero Recode? In my opinion, it shouldn't be needed. A software should be installed without the need to unregister stuff like that. It should work properly anyway... :)

NeroDigitalExt.dll is a shell extension -- unregistering it shouldn't affect Nero at all (except right-click functions in Windows Explorer), while fixing the problems if the DLL itself is buggy (which it well could be).

P.S. there may be other fixes too, like looking for a checkbox in one of the advanced options in some NVE app(s) allowing to enable/disable shell extensions.

Elias: do you choose all the file extensions for NVE apps during install? Maybe something there is causing a problem.

No, in fact, I don't choose any file extensions to be handled by NVE at all. :) Well there was one other dude in the topic :) By the way JohnV, slightly OT, but why isn't the 5.1 audio playable in QuickTime?

Windows XP Pro SP2
AMD Duron 946 mhz
256 mb SDRAM (16 mb to the Graphics card)
S3 Twister K 16 mb
18 GB Toshiba
In other words, a Compaq Presario 701EA.

I'm quite far from a clean install. And I recently made a couple of reinstalls of Nero/NVE and a couple of "remove" and "add" serial keys. In my case, uninstalling only NVE was enough to remove the issue. I always uncheck all files so that none are assosciated with NVE software.

btw, I'm on XP SP2 (no additional windows updates), as hardware:
I845PE mobo
P4 2.4 cpu
512 DDR ram
PATA100 IDE
Nec 3520A dvd-rw, Liteon 12x cd-rw, Toshiba dvd-rom

Yes, the problem is exactly the NeroDigitalExt.dll
As azsd said, making a :

regsvr32 /u NeroDigitalExt.dll

It solved brilliantly the problem...Woooou!

Well, W2003 with updates and latest NVE.
NVE was installed as first program (after updates), and just after installing, the problem arised.
Note 1 : the problem was present even on W2000 and XP after a fresh install.
Note 2 : the problem is not present in NVE 3.0.1.27 (previous pack)

Yes, this is true, before I realized that Nero was the problem, I browsed files he old dll with the new one, so I renamed it to NeroDigitalExt..dll and regsvr32 it. It was exactly like using the old one. And yes, I regsvr32 /u the old one before I registered the new one. Well, that's it for me now, I'm going to uninstall this buggy nero package. I hate how it takes over 200 mb or something and I'd only want the encoder. A vfw codec package would be PWNAGEthrough VirtualDub just to get rid of the painfully slow browsing. However, Desktop worked fine in Explorer. What pissed me off was that it was like this with EVERY folder except Desktop in Windows Explorer. I mean, it's detail view, and do not cache thumbnails is off, and still it's slow, even with it on it's slow. The new dll didn't change anything, it was still slow while using it. However, I couldn't replace it.

I have this issue with NVE also. Tomorrow, if i get a chance ill test a few configurations on my 'Virtual PC' and hopefully give some more information on it.

I've noticed that when I bring up the shell properties dialog for a nero digital .mp4 file, the dialog is oversized, with a few dozen extra pixels of greyness to the right and bottom of the useful info. Anyone else notice this?

Same problem. I was almost going to reinstall the whole thing when I read this thread. :rolleyes:
