View Full Version : spring time user poll: mix of sex on the board!

The reason why I like to come up with this investigation has two simple reasons:
(Yeah, I know it sounds silly and childish, but please read on!)

1.) With todays temperature Spring time is starting were I live, which is Germany, and if you like it or not, most human beings have a distinctive and quite common reaction on it, which has a lot to do with hormone levels.
One of the main effects is that one seems to be encouraged to endeavour the physical proximity of a real representative of the sex that one feels attracted to much more than any other times of the year.
I don't think I have to elaborate on that :)
The situation of sitting in front of the screen doesn't really help though...

2.) Today I stumbled over a post that seems to come from a woman.
I won't tell where I found it, but the profile information did not deliver a proof. Maybe someone just wanted to play with allusion. It doesn't really matter. My senses are merely a bit irritable ATM.

To make it short, in case you already wonder: This poll has got nothing to do with sexual intercourse actually.
With these two coincidences as a starting point it just popped to my mind that despite the joy I have being a part of this wonderful community I barely know anything about its members.
Once we had a poll about our nationality which was refreshing. But this is a detail which often slips through in our postings, for exemple french or german influences are easy to spot in, let's say, personal style of expressions. ;)
Also this info may be given in the profile description.
Apart from that the picture remains quite empty.

Surely anonymitiy has its undisputable advantages concerning our communication in this place. I'm sure I wouldn't act the same way if I sit vis-_-vis to all the people who post to the same thread.
The way we treat each other is less biased due to lack of data on personality we usually rely on - with sound and vision in the first place.

But since this forum isn't about mixing cocktails (actually the classical Mai Tai is my favorite) or raising children, but about DVD backup which necessarily involves use of computers a lot, I simply assume the majority of members is male.
In a way I find this a sad thing, especially as females are generally far advanced in several aspects of communication than males (don't ask for sources, 'cause that's not my point here!).
Who keeps the family business running and calls friends on birthdays while you are sitting in front of the screen all day? ;)
For a more personal reason I'd simply feel more comfortable being ensured that this is not a men-only-club. The mix of genders makes it appear more interesting to me.

As a brash guess I think we have slightly less than 10% females here as member population, but more than 5%. On a second thought I wonder if the situation would be different if I included guest votes...

Finally, I'd like to invite you all to vote for your actual state of sexe, guaranteed that the single user remains anonymous of course.
And for those who find this still presumptuous: I declare once more, though the idea for this has its origin in a filthy mood, I have the most honest intentions. I think I made myself clear enough.

...Err...reaching the end of this even the "Preview post" funtion does not reveal the poll options. Where do I set that up?

edit: got it! Don't cheat! Be H O N E S T !!!

I don't think I got the joke or thought it was much of one. :p However the option "Yes please" always does well on these types of polls. :D

be honest with ourselves, or be honest with the poll?

hormone levels huh? might explain the 3 months off again on again running noses, follow by 3 months of over heating, all this time i thought it will hay fever

1 female so far! Close to my guess ;)

Of course it wasn't ment _that_ serious. But I had to connect it a bit to something more concerning which really was on my mind last night. But you never know, if there were more females than expected here, if they acted rather militant, you know like hearing terms like "sexual perverted", "macho", "deviant" and so on would have spoiled everything...

Well, sorry, THIS is what I was afraid of: someone feeling offended while taking things too serious.
I didn't entitle it: Now everyone - Post your b**bs here!
Revealing the percentage of female users in this place isn't really a big thing, is it?!

2 females now, with a grand total of 6.25% :p

[edit: 5.88 , and going down :D ]

Probably it's clear from my posting style if read in that light - but since i have this winking girl or cats in my avatar i'll say it explictily - i'm male.

It's a shame there aren't more females in the software industry/community/whatever, but maybe we are overall simply too nerdy to be dealt with :scared:

A disproportionate number more males suffer from A/V geek syndrome than do females. :p I have some theories but nothing solid. All I can say is it is kinda sad. I wouldn't mind finding a significant other with a similar interest. ;) But the numbers are against me. :|

Well I think the numbers are even worse when it comes to regular long term posters. I know 2 for sure, have my doubts about a third one, and that's about it I'd say. All the same, It seems it's more particular to Doom9 than encoding in general. More technical maybe....

My post was a joke :(
Mods are not allowed joke, this gives heart attacks to members :p

OK, didn't sound that way to my ears (which are also irritable during this season, as you might expect... ;) ), apart from that I nearly cracked up as one-sentence-ending-on-exclamation-mark postings from a mod is always a heavy weight

I think the percentage of females involved would raise abnormally if we'd count in those in the second row who profit from achievements mad e expressively by those males who suffer from [...]from A/V geek syndrome[...].
Exemple:
She:Could you please record my favorite TV show (___Sex and the City___) in a tiny file with good quality??
He: Sure!

You don't have to find other women to keep you company. If the 3 of you are feeling lonely please feel free to let me know if I can be of help in anyway. :)
And yes I am a male, single

While the sun seems like it never wants to stop shining I'll take a short resume on the current results as far as members participated:

:) I'm still within my guess: >5% females on board. But it's on the edge.
How about more women friendly guides to attract their interest like How to transfer the digital cam recordings of my childs birth into a suitable video format to spread via email?

Yet another male here. :D

So the rumors that females cannot drive, park and encode is true then?

Na. I'm thinking of one that can "drive" to my place.
She knows how to "park" her bod
"encode" me, I'll let that to your imagination

Don't know what to tell ... 3rd option of the pole still attracts me ...
Technically, I'm a male. But as for sex, not quite sure :-)

As a member of the forum, I always had sympathy for niamh's posts - delicate and smart. The more this forum has such members, the better.
Bluedan. The very first time I saw the avatar, I knew you were a woman :-)
