lost AC3 audio after editing

I have been using VirualDub and find it’s a great program, I have been editing SDTV from a DTB VisionPlus Card with Mpeg audio, this works well, no problems. When I edit and save a HDTV recoding with AC3 audio in VirtulDub the audio is lost? Properties in VirtualDub say its there, the unaltered original plays fine, what is wrong?

I have used various AC3 codecs recommended from this website and other places and the problem still persists, is this a known problem with vitualdub? And should I use another program rather than vitualdub?
