View Full Version : Program for raising the volume on WAV's?

I happen to have a CD that the tunes are just too soft on.
I am looking to rip/ raise the volume/ burn back to cd.
It is an older store bought CD from the 80's that obviously wasn't mastered too well. Even with the volume all the way up on my amp it's still not at a level I like.
I have really no need to convert to any other format unless it is required to do what I want.

Everything I find says works on mp3's, but I would rather stay away from compression if possible.

I was thinking Besweet, but I don't know if it's truly what I am looking for.

Thanks,
Mark

Ok I think I got one way that works, but if there is a better / easier way please let me know.

I found a freeware cd ripper to wav format on cnet.com called cdex.

I ripped to wav format then used besweet with a gain of 8db to raise the volume.

On the subject of raising the volume how high can you typically go before running into audio problems? What is the first thing I should be listening for to know I have gone too far? Where is a good starting point?

I can easily burn the songs to a new cd. I think I will be able to go deaf with this one. Go Metal. Nothing worse then a low volume metal song.

use EAC (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de) to rip the cd to wave files, in the EAC options, there is a normalize tab, check it on and set it to 98%(probably the default), that should be good and that way you won't get any clipping.

Aside from that, you could use any wave editing program, or besweet to do some DRC on the track and then do the normalizing.

Well, since it's such an old CD you might need to use some dynamics compression as well to get the audio to sound even remotely as loud as current CDs; take a look at BeSweet's boost module in that case.

This isn't the fault of your CD, but rather of the mastering of current CDs - they're dynamics compressed to hell and back nowadays, so everything that's older than a few years will sound terribly quiet.
