Recently i have heard that a new kind of mp3 standard has been made to support 5.1channel in a single mp3 file.
Did anyone have any information about it?
Regards.

Regards. the mp3 standard defined real multichannel years ago already, its just that noone ever wrote an encoder for it (i am not sure, but i think mplayer can decode 5.1 mp3 already)

the fhg extension is not covered by the mp3 standard and is not real multichannel, but stereo with extra info that tells the decoder how to upmix during playback

The fraunhofer institute has a 5.1 mp3 codec on it's web site for limited testing...

You can test ac3/2.0 to mp3 as can be seen on picture below., example 1 and 2.
I am using this graphs for live records to .avi and .mp3 from digital sattv, to correct on fly audio volume and surround efects but keeping them in .mp3 or .avi file.
It is also possible on fly to convert stereo to ac3 5.1 and mux it to .avi video.

Thank you for these information.
i wonder what's the problem on compressing to 5.1c mp3.
imho, it's an easy operation that we mux 6 mp3 stream into one, and write a breif upmix data into it.:o
i wonder what's the difference between compressing to 5.1 and 2.0?

Still regards,
MR
