I am using DVD-Rebuilder with cce settings: VBR_Bias - 25 Quality Prec: 16 and 4 passes. I just finished encoding family guy disc 2 and noticed a weird quality difference in the first two chapters of the first episode as compared with the rest of the chapters. These screenshots were taken with PowerDVD and have been compressed to jpg but you can still notice a difference.
Chapters 1 and 2: www.stanford.edu/~mhleva/Chapter_2.jpg
Chapter 3 and on: www.stanford.edu/~mhleva/Chapter_3.jpg
i did just notice that i checked 25% quality drop on extras. could rebuilder have misread these 2 chapters as extras?
**EDIT** also, under avs options i have deinterlace with decomb. does it hurt to deinterlace with decomb if its not necessary?
Thanks

On episodic DVD's you cant use steal space from extras because it just looks at the largest vts and assumes that is the main movie and then it lowers the bitrate on all other vts's.. So what is happening is that one episode is getting all the bitrate whereas all the other ones are lacking because of that option. Turn it off and you should be fine.

I don't know if Rebuilder deinterlaces every time you enable that, but if it does and your source is not interlaced, you'll lose quality. You'd better turn it off if the source is progressive.

Definately turn OFF Deinterlace with Decomb AND steal space from extras.

Is it like that the whole way through?
I've had problems with it because it's a hybrid..

The quality loss is only visible through the first 2 chapters of the first episode. It sounds like you have encoded this dvd or a family guy dvd in the past. Were you able to completely get rid of the sporadic horizontal lines in the picture? If so, whatd you do? I know the source is messed up but is there anyway to remedy it?

Do not deinterlace, let the program encode it as it is - interlaced. When you watch it on the TV, you won't see any combing.
There's nothing wrong with combing, it is not a fault in the video.

How do you disable Steal Space from Extras?
I can see how to select 25%, 33%, and 50% reduction (from extras), but there is no option to NOT steal space from extras in the UI. Do I have to edit rebuilder.ini?

Just click on the option that is ticked and the whole thing will be disabled.
