I have read dozens of articles & tutorials here, on divx.com and other sites about converting Dvd movies to high-quality Divx video with an embedded Ac3 5.1 channel audio stream.
All of them make reference to virtualdub and usually have 4 or more steps. The procedure I have been using is only two steps, but since everyone else seems to be doing this differently I want to know why my method is wrong...or not so right...in terms of quality loss/compatibility/time spent encoding/etc.
Here is my Procedure:
1. Rip DVD movie using SmartRipper into one big vob file with the correct audio stream (usually English Ac3 5.1) embedded in the file.
2. Fire up Dr. Divx and convert the movie to a Home Theater Quality Divx file (I never change any of the settings). Note: My system uses the WinDVD 5 codec with a registry fix that doesn't allow it to drop frames.
Dr. Divx does its two passes and two to three hours later I have myself a great-looking Divx movie, usually 750mb - 1.5 gb in size. It plays beautifully on my computer and home theater pc using only ffdshow as the Divx/Ac3 decoder.
If there is something technically wrong with doing it this way, I am really curious to know what it is...any comments, however brief, are appreciated.
