I have not posted here in over a year. A lot has changed with DVD-backup software. I remember having to transcode movies manually and use Scenarist to re-author. That is why I became bored with DVD backups since they required so much work. DVDShrink is a godsend. I don't know how any competitor can exist since this amazing program is free. Are there any programs better that DVD shrink? Does DVD Shrink have any issues that I should know about?

I don't think it has any real "issues" but there are a number of known errors and bugs.

Visit the DVD Shrink forum at digital-digest and look in their FAQ/Knowledgebase section for a somewhat lengthy list.

The only main issue is it cannot handle the ARcoSS and other protections on discs such as Resident Evil 2 and Little Black Book.

A pre-rip with the latest DVD Decrypter solves that so it isn't a big deal. Decryoter can also be used after compresssion to burn the DVD. It makes a freeware rip, compress and burn solution.

I personally prefer DVD Rebuilder over Shrink. But that is an apples to oranges comparison as DVDRebuilder relies on and Encoder as opposed to a transcoder (well except for Rejig). My opinion is that it gives better quality, but isnt quite as easy to use as Dvd Shrink. Oh and you have the limitless possiblities of avs scripts as well when using Rebuilder. But again that is MY opinion and anyone is entitled to have a different one.

Nothing really serious, except it's no longer being developed. That could end up becoming a problem in the future, but doesn't hurt its usability now.

@fewtch - I suspect the newly named Nero AG would love us all to migrate to Recode ASAP, where, presumably, they have a policy of promptly fixing bugs and attending to issues (on non-copy protected DVDs) (I am not being sarcastic here, folks).

However, as you say, DVD Shrink should be around for long enough until it drops dead from technical exhaustion and studio copy protection advances.

Let's hope that by that time, manufacturing efficiencies and volume purchases will have brought DL media prices into the realm of the reasonable.

Of course, also by that time, we might have seen DVD technology itself move forward.

Hey, no objections here if I could back up 5 DVD-9's to a single Blu-Ray disc... :D
