I have a AVI file that I want to make into a VCD..
its too big, and I cant put it on a DVD disk,

I want to be able to put a VCD onto a DVD disk....

How do I come about that?:confused:

It sounds like you're asking 2 different things so I'll give you 2 different answers:

1) AVI->VCD use a program called TMPEGenc. Follow the project wizard, and it should be pretty self explanatory

2) VCD->DVD use a program called TMPEGenc DVD Author. Details here:

No VCD or SVCD on DVD. It was discussed already here.

And make direct AVI-DVD conversion (don't listen to emazur :D )

Of course I agree a direct conversion is the way to go, but his wording was strange. He says
"I want to make into a VCD"
"I cant put it on a DVD disk"
"I want to be able to put a VCD onto a DVD disk"

A bit conflicting isn't it? So I gave answers to cover all bases. Unless "cant" was a typo, then it makes sense

Now What do you need to convert the AVI?

Read the DVD2SVCD guides and forums. That program should be able to do what you want pretty easily.
Even though the name is 2VCD the program has expanded to DVD's as well and you can also import AVI's.

my weapon of choice is avisynth + QuEnc or HC (depends on what computer i'm on...) then author in Maestro. unfortunately Maestro is both proprietary and not developed for several years. but i don't know any other programs myself...

i think that a certain level of DVD authoring can be achieved with free/opensource programs.

it's possible Nero's stuff can do it all for you in 1 fell swoop. definitely worth a look.
