Downloaded Movie Quality

I downloaded a sample movie from the internet, and it had amazing quality at very low bitrates, the quality was great in one cd. My DivXes are normal DVD resolution but look a bit awful, blocking and full of artifacts. I have messed around a bit with XviD but I can't get it to encode at the same great quality I see in this movie. I read the faqs and followed the instructions, but only got mediocre results. Does anyone have special settings (cropping/resizing maybe?) or XviD settings that would be better if I set?

Read the rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) (especially rules 6, 1 and 1a) read the guides (http://www.doom9.org/divx-encoding.htm) and search (http://forum.doom9.org/search.php?s=) the forum extensively, because you are very, very certainly not the first person to ask this question.

Also, using AutoGK (http://www.autogk.me.uk/) would be a very good idea.
