View Full Version : Xvid, does it ring more?

To me Xvid always looks like it has more ringing/misquito noise then other asp implementations, such as ffdshow and divx. This is quite annoying, especialy considering it does better at everything else. So my question is, have other people notticed this, and if so what is the cause of the increased ringing?

depends on the matrix used during conversion,..

Though since Xvid is sharper than some of the other mpeg4 asp implementations I would not be surprised if ringing is more visable in a xvid encode,...

It mainly is due to the use of MPEG/custom matrices instead of H.263. Regard obstrusive ringing as a sign of overquantization and switch to a matrix with higher coefficients (or to H.263) when it occurs, I'd say.

Thanks for the replies, during my unoficial tests I used the h263 matrix
specifically because thats what the codecs I was comparing it with use that matrix, and because it doesnt ring much.

I suppose Xvid somehow obtains a sharper picture by ringing more, it would be cool if there was an option for this, as it is hard to fight ringing etc at low bitrates.

more the other way around, if the image gets sharper ringing get's 'enhanced', don't think there's an easy way around that,..
