ffdshow with/without xvid

Hello...
I've noticed that ffdshow plays xvid avi's a lot better on slower computers (by slower I mean still over 1gh cpu). Is it better to just install ffdshow alone or does it improve anything to install ffdshow and xvid? If they are both installed, how does the program know which to use?

You can tell ffdshow to let xvid decode xvid movies while still being able to use the postprocessing of ffdshow.

In the ffdshow video configuration, go to codec and select xvid (instead of libavcodec) as the decoder for the xvid format.

You should see almost no difference between using XviD to decode or ffdshow if you have a computer that is over 1ghz.

Well if you aren't gonna be doing any encoding but just decoding of XviD files then there isn't if all you want to do is use ffdshow.

Well if ffdshow is set for xvid then it will take priority over XviD codec in decoding, if not then it will use the next decoder in priority which is usually XviD unless you have some other codec installed that is set to decode mpeg-4 files which can interfere with this.

My wife has a cel1.2 oc'd to 1.6. Grant that it has an ati xpert98 (8mb pci) video card, though. It seems that anything encoded with the newest versions of xvid max the cpu. She can watch older xvid encodes at full screen without any problems, but anything within the last 3 months or so must be watched in a 100% window (200% drops frames and fullscreen is way out of the question). This is with ffdshow installed. If xvid is installed it's even slower.
I just found, yesterday, that vlc plays these same files in fullscreen using about 25% of the cpu without ffdshow or xvid installed.
I knew ffdshow could be used as a stand-alone. I just wasn't sure if xvid would give it any better picture quality or post-processing. I assume that new versions of xvid have things that ffdshow doesn't support, since ffdshow is older.

If you are having slow video playing problems with ffdshow, try turning on "Use overlay mixer" under output configuration in ffdshow. It helps on a slow PC.

Some files plays with sound and video not in sync when using ffdshow but plays well with xvid decoder(but no pretty postprocessing).

Is it because the file is not encoded well or something happened to it during download?

pls, pls, pls, avoid such words as 'downloaded', 'obtained', ... d'ye know, there are some rules to be applied here.

ffdshow w/bsplayer is sg different than w/other directshow players. at least, i've been unable to set up ffdshow in bsplayer so far. try media player classic, zoomplayer, ... we have a lot.
