GMC on or off / B frames on or off

Just wanted to know the difference between the settings is. I found out that if i want to display xvid properly on my stand-alone player, i need both these options turned off.

Is there any difference quality wise? Or does it just increase the encoding time?

If b-frames were only slowing down the encoding process, they wouldn't have been made default.

You will find on this forum all the information you want, and even more. To summarize quickly :

B-Frames help a lot, and doesn't slow down the encoding ( especially if you're using VHQ4 ). They are compatible with a lot of hardware player, provided that you use the correct settings ( #consecutive bframes and packedbitstream are relevant here, though I don't remember which value they should be )

GMC doesn't help that much, slows the encoding, and make the encoding incompatible with standalone. It's not default, and there's a reason for it.

Well, i've tried it with either 1 or 2 consecutive b frames, but it still wouldn't play. only without b frames and gmc was the player willing to display the files.

And i was also referring to other modes of display (like on a pc).

Try this: GMC always disabled, 1 B-Frame, packed bitstream enabled.
Those are the standard DivX settings, so if your player is DivX certified or plays back correctly DivX encodes than those settings should work flawlessly.
If you're using Xvid 1.1 beta you have another setting to play with. Set the profile to DXN HT (DivX Home Teather) so the VBV buffer will be enabled and set exactly like in DivX HT profile.
That will ensure a perfect playback (no hickups, desync or stuttering) of your encodes.

DivX is ok, only problems are XviD, and i found a way around them. Just wanted to know if the end quality of the encode would suffer with these 2 settings disabled.

Yes, disabling b-frames will lower the codec efficiency and so the final quality.
Xvid GMC is too advanced (3 warp points vs DivX 1 warp point) for the standalone players and will not work (until it gets supported), so keep it disabled (also GMC is almost useless).
I suggest to try the settings above. If they dont work then use the fourcc changer bundled with koepi's build of xvid and change the fourcc of your encodes to DIVX (remember to keep the settings i suggested in the above post).

Does the player plays back encodes done with "bi-directional encoding" enabled in DivX?

I find it really weird that your standalone doesnt support b-frames.
Maybe it's a really old model or maybe the installed firmware is buggy.

It's a hyundai dvx 701p and i bought it last week. Its firmware could be buggy. I'll try again this weekend with only 1 consecutive b frame, but to my knowledge even that didn't work, but i'm not 100% sure.

I hope you will succeed with b-frames (no gmc, no qpel, no PB, no fancy matrix ) also to avoid stutters or hickups, try a low final bitrate (4000 kbp/s instant should make something like +- 800 global kbp/s) can be checked with gspot or vdub .

You did'nt say if you have used the Dxn HT profile (with xvid 1.1 Beta1 or post beta1) as recommended by sharktooth ?

As we talk about testing, consider trying AUTOGK with the .ess option (with xvid 1.03) tuned specially for the ess vibrato(1) chip.

I did'nt find enough references to be more specific about your player only the ones given in the other thread. Afraid you'll have to go for trial and error. Good luck.

for maxmimum compatibility, don't use GMC, packed bitsream and don't go higher than 2 for maximum consecutives b-frame.

Quarter pixel may not give any problem.

Whoops, completely forgot. I found the right settings now. No GMC, packed bitstream, 1 consecutive b-frame and 6of9 matrix as of late.
