Little "jumps" during DVD playback...help!

Hi guys!

I've one little problem: when I play a DVD on my PC there are a lot of little jerks in the video. With slow motion scenes these jerks aren't noticeable but with fast scenes they are tedious.

Audio is not affected.

I've tried to reinstall video drivers, nforce drivers, monitor drivers but the problem didn't disappear.

I've also tried to use different players: mplayerc, powerdvd, etc, but this didn't solve the problem.

I don't think it's an hardware problem too, because i have:

AMD 2400+ (overclocked @ 2239mhz)
RAM 512mb
Video card Geforce4 ti4200
DMA is enabled

How can I solve this problem? Any suggestion?

Sorry for this vague answer but it will probably help.

I think this is part of the Nforce WHQL driver pack from NVidia. Get the latest, install them but do not install Nvidia's supposed performance enhancing DMA drivers (I think this is right - I can't quite remember the actual component). The installer makes it quite clear that you are about to install some optional component that will "improve performance" but instead it just messes with optical drive performance.

Sorry I can't be more clear I just can't remember the name of the actual component. But it did fix this issue for me.

Well, I found the solution and that is quite strange!

I have an LCD monitor and I found that these little jumps disappear with a refresh rate of 75hz. The reason? I don't know...maybe because 75hz is a multiple of 25hz? (I live in Italy and a PAL stream has 25 frame per second)

I really am not able to find another possible explanation... :confused:

No need for a different explanation - if you're using a refresh rate that can't be divided evenly by the frame rate you will get those jerks, since you can't just start displaying the next frame while the last one is still being shown (okay, this is of course more of a problem with a CRT which scans across the screen when displaying, but TFTs sadly emulate that behaviour).

So if the refresh rate isn't a multiple of the frame rate, the duration that a frame is being shown will be different for each one, resulting in unsmooth video.

If you want to make sure the video is totally synchronized to the refresh rate, try using Reclock (http://reclock.free.fr/), but even without it using the proper refresh rate will work much better... :)
