as discussed on hydrogenaudio (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=32111) a guy called David Hammerton reverse engineered the lossless audio coding format (ALAC) offered in itunes (which apple places in .mp4 as private stream) and released an open source decoder for it
