Mainly, it's because that version was rock solid stable, and not as much commercial as DivX is nowadays. I know DivX was commercial back then too, but it's even worse now. At least the free version wasn't commercial back then. I can't even start VirtualDub without my firewall going berserk because of the latest DivX codec nagging about the Pro trial and sending stuff to DXN. I really don't trust DXN any more. What's worse is even though I downloaded the free version, NOT Pro, I decline the Pro trial, and still, I can use Pro. What the hell? I don't want Pro! And it asks me every time to switch to Pro. I just want to get Pro off my balls. And even though I choose the slowest encoding settings, I must choose it every time because the settings don't get saved when VirtualDub is closed. Best of all it didn't have that stupid DivX logo. I know it can be turned off, but it annoys me a lot just by being there :D Seriously, I know DXN have to make money, but come on you guys, it's not like the cost for providing an MPEG-4 codec is that high so it drives them to the point where they're getting evil like say, Real. 3ivx aren't busting our balls for going Pro. Why should DXN? Okay so XviD is open source/GPL and don't need to pay for providing an MPEG-4 codec, but 3ivx is, if I'm correct in the same situation as DivX, right?

It doesn't send us anything, it's pulling an XML file from us. You can actually turn it off in the codec settings.

If you read the screen, that is because the regular non-pro version does not have the slowest mode, so it asks you if you want to start a Pro trial so that you can use it, but you click "No"..
We're updating The Pro/regular/license system for the next version so that it's less annoying... :)
