First, as a newbie to this forum, I apologize if this question has been answered many times before, but before posting I tried searching and found nothing. (In fact, searching on doom9 seems to be totally broken: if I use just the keyword "DVD", I still find no pages--am I doing something wrong?)
I could have sworn that in the past that if I inserted a dvd in my drive, that windows media player would come up and that it would play. It has been a while since I have tried this, and when I tired it just now, wmp came up however it soon popped up an error dialog which said:
Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open Display in Control Panel, and then lower your screen resolution and color quality settings. To view the DVD Troubleshooter, click More Information.
Mcrosoft's DVD Troubleshooter asks me to adjust downward the monitor settings as suggested by the dialog above; that did not fix the problem. As the second step, it asked me to get the latest drivers; I downloaded the latest from matrox and still no dice.
Before going any further, let me note that my pc is running win xp pro sp2, 2.8 ghz p4, 2 gb of ram, and my video system is:
Matrox Millenium P650
memory: 64 MB of DDR
driver: 1.8.0.133
graphics BIOS: 1.3-12
I happened to notice in the matrox control panel the following:
Matrox PowerDesk-HF --> Video Playback Settings
has a Use video overlay option. I have tried playing dvds with this option both checked and unchecked, and always the same error dialog appears.
This somewhat surprised me, since a few of the reports that found when googling for
"Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open Display"
mentioned problems with overlay

Anyone here have any suggestions for getting wmp to play dvds?
And if you hate wmp, what is your favroite alternative (particularly if it is freeware/open source)?
