Detailed codec information

Is there a way to get a detailed codec information about a video file?

I just recently got a Hyundai DVX 701P standalone DVD/mpeg4 player, and i'm having problems with it. It will play DivX/mp3 or AC3 .avi files ok, but it will give all kinds of problems when it comes to xvid.

1 video "blipped" (the bottom half of the picture kept blinking (showing something different - whether it's the same image only flipped or mirrored, or a picture from 10 frames on, i don't know)
1 video plays for 0.05 of a second then drops back to the menu
a lot just say Codec not supported

But then i found an old-ish one which plays fine! And all i can get on the info of the files is that they're xvid.

So, after this, rather pointless story, i ask the question, is there a way to get info on what version of xvid is used in a video? I know for certain that the codec in the first video mentioned is 1.0.2. The one that plays for 0.05 of a second is either 1.0.0 or 1.0.1. But i'm not sure about the one that does play.

And this is driving me bonkers!!!! I need to know what to do so i can get this player to play all the videos i throw at it. :angry:

Maybe you can use this Tool its name is
AviCodec (http://avicodec.duby.info/)

in my opinion its better than Gspot... but test it yourself

Hello Icebone,

MPEG4 Modifier should be the answer. use the search function in this forum to get on the thread and the download link.

It will give you the xvid number (037 being the 1.03 stable), indications about packet bitstream, Qpel, GMC etc... all theses options being sensitive for a standalone. :)

Depending on your config, you may need downloading additional progs or Dll; infos in the thread.

Got curious about your SAP, couldn't find a test on my usual reference: http://www.divxtest.com/resultats.php3 (in french) but got some info elsewhere .
The dvx 701P has a ESS vibrato2 chip like the phillips DVP 630 or the Thomson DTH 222. These 2 SAP do not support GMC or QPEL with xvid so I suppose your Hyundai behaves the same way. :(

If you use AutoGK and the .ess option to encode you should not have problems, if it is to play xvid encoded elsewhere ...... (see forum rules)

Well I found Mpeg4 Modifier and ran it on 2 files. The first one doesn't work, while the second one does.

Ok,

To know if GMC or QPEL are used use the video info button (not ?modify-able you'll have to reencode if source of the problem).

For the first file use mpeg4 modifier to unpack packed bitstream (PB) as it can also be a source of problem on SAP (for xvid); you can also see that there are no PB in the second file.

I do not know much about Standalone Players. But IIRC, some of them do not like B-frames too much.
The log you posted shows that the movie that is correctly played does not have B-frames at all. So, I guess it comes from that: your "new" encoding uses B-frames or uses too much B-frames (2 consecutive).

If it is the problem, you'll have to re-encode the movie without B-frames or maybe with 1 "consecutive" B-frame.

Ok, i got an encode done without B frames, but now there are these:

B-VOPs: 0 (0,00%)

the result was that it played for about 15 seconds and then dropped back to the menu with a Codec not supported message. Now that i've gotten rid of B frames, how would i do it for S and N frames too?

Oh dear, how did those 3 little GMC's find their way in there?

Well, anyway, i've done away with them and finally have the right settings for an encode that won't make my SAP hiccup. Even though the second pass now requires 50% more time than before. *grumble*
