View Full Version : Does a dvd-burning software exist that allows large RAM buffers?

Hi!

I'm searching for a dvd-burning software that allows large ram buffers, the larger the better, but definitely above 100mb (300mb preferred). I get stuttering on my standalone if burnproof had to kick in.

Nero max 80mb, clonedvd & copytodvd has no such setting. Dvddecrypter burns only isos. Plextools buffer 300mb but are a pain to use for dvds.

I would just need the burning capability, no shrinking or else required.
Hope you can help me out ;-))

Thanks! NaN

I don't know about one that can do 300mb, but Prassi's ONES can do 128mb.

Hi NaN, how old is your burner? All burners have upto 8mb ram for preventing buffer underruns. Lets use Nero for example, if the buffer is already stuffed with 80mb of info, it is then feeding your burner's 2-8mb ram buffer....so what's the idea of having a huge buffer from the burning software? I think you would have a better result by replacing your burner to a newer one perhaps? BenQ, NEC, et al are quite inexpensive...

My 2 cents.

Thanks for your replies mates!

I'm going to have a look at Prassi's Ones, looks really promising!

@Surf: my burner is a brand new Plextor, but it seems that my equally brandnew Pioneer standalone dvd-player doesn't like 8x burned (verbatim) discs where burnproof had to kick in. I get dropouts.

All ideas are welcome!

Thanks! Nan

Imagine Moe the bartender's voice. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat! Brand new Plextor which costed 2 or 3 times more than my oem Pioneer giving you grief!!? Plextors are normally equiped with 8mb cache, right? I have never owned one yet, what about Plextools proggy? Does it have a burn-proof turn-off button or something? As in trying to burn withOUT burn-proof protection? For experimenting purpose only. Why not also try other reputable media brands such as Taiyo Yuden(Maxell) or Ritek? Other el cheapo can burn happily with 2mb cache and yours' with 8mb.....My bet's on the media....IF other medias failed then I would resort to return and exchange for another or different brand...NEC's latest.

Oh, the plextor is a great drive. With verbatim media it delivers excellent results (in terms of PIF/POF errors). It seems much more likely that the pioneer standalone has a really bad drive, since the same dvds at the same position are perfectly readable in the pc dvd-rom.

Plextools are not a very comfortable tool. Imagine you have to manually choose ISO/UDF as file system, manually create the TS-folders and always check the other dvd-restrictions (no joliet, only 8.3...), thats in plextools 2.x.

Plextools XL aka 3.x are far better (VideoDVD-template!), but have 2 weaknesses: they cost 40E! And they don't allow chosing a dvd-directory (just drag'n'drop which IMO sucks).

So?

Otherwise I love to have 350mb buffer ;-))

I think software generally doesnt come with that large of a buffer because it usually isnt needed. (when 80 mb isnt enough usually something else in the data chain should be examined..) you can have a buffer underrun with even a 1 gig buffer since the buffer that really counts is the one in the drive. i would suggest burning at lower speeds before buying new software (or writing your own?) ;)

Thanks for your reply.

As I said in the decrypting-forum, I usually get underruns when I reactivate e.g. mozilla after some time of inactivity. Win seems to start swaping it to the swap file and reads it back when it's needed later. This usually causes my underruns.

Closing all applications would be a possiblity, but with a large buffer why should I do it?

Of course with a brand new 16x burner I'm not going to burn at 2x or 4x since I only use high quality media (rated 8x) in a high quality burner.

If no underrun occurs, my discs are perfectly readable in the standalone.

Cheers, NaN

PS: when looking at the excellent dvd-decrypter I don't think of coding myself a burning application ;-)) BTW the next version brings a 256mb buffer!
