View Full Version : Janus vs. BT868 for analog capture

I know I'm asking an analog question in a DV forum but there is more likely to be real-world experience here.

Assuming that I have a WinTV/BT868 in a computer robust enough to cap analog sources without drops what is your opinion of capture quality when compared to the same analog sources captured with a MyHD MDP-130/Janus? Both cap formats will be Huff/avi. I'm guessing that experience with the MDP-100/120 would also be applicable as it seems the hardware has not changed.

Looking to upgrade to DV and if I can integrate both analog and DV into one card it would be great.

Thanks,
Golem

The MDP-120, and 130 are great for capturing HDTV streams, but it is impossible to capture raw frames from an analog video source. Instead, the card uses hardware deinterlacing on all analog inputs (and you can't turn it off).

The deinterlacing looks good on a PC monitor, but it is not good if you are capturing with the intent of going to DVD, SVCD, VCD, etc.

Both the MDP-120 and MDP-130 are excellent cards. The primary difference between them is the 130 supports unencrypted cable QAM signals and has a more sensitive tuner than the 120. The MDP-130 is especially good at overcoming multipath in incoming signals.

I don't know of any good HDTV cards that are also good for analog captures. Your best bet is to use a seperate card for analog captures.

Thanks for the thorough reply wbo!

Really is a shame that there is no bypassing the on-board processing. As As I will still be doing a good bit of analog capture for encode to DVD it seems I'll have to do my best at getting these cards to coexist (I've heard people with good/bad results getting WinTV PVR's to coexist).

Btw, I can't complain about the cap quality of the WinTV-FM that I've been using for years but I'm always open to upgrade suggestions in regards to my current analog capture card. ;-)

And... the MDP-130 is on order!
