I was wondering if any company has mentioned the possibility of releasing double-sided DVD+R DL discs? It would be great to store 17 gigs of info on just 1 disc. I have a DVD jukebox with "FLIP" ability, and it would be great to store as many home movies on such double-sided discs, if ever they hit the market.

When's the last time you even saw a double sided disc? I haven't seen one in a really long time. Last one I saw was Schindler's List.

Not everyone wants to back up Hollywood movies. There are ALOT of TV shows that are now on double-sided DVD-9s. I can think of Green Acres and Gilligan's Island off the top of my head, but Hollywood movies aren't the only thing people may want to back up. I have alot of home movies I've shot and it would be great to store as many of them as I can in the least amount of DVDs possible. I think blank DVD companies should seriously consider producing such double-sided DVD+R DL recordables as the ultimate DVD solution before the industry switches over to HD-DVD/Blu-Ray.

I doubt that it will be realised. TOo much troubles by manufacturing. And no real advance in compare to 2 disc. Except if you have reader with laser above disc too :)

Well, I have a 300 disc DVD changer that has a FLIP option. It's not a second laser, but it will play both sides of each disc in the player.

Actually I own 3 different 300 disc DVD changers. They are all the same model, Sony DVP-CX875P. I'm not sure but I think that model has been discontinued, and replaced by a 400 disc changer that doesn't have a FLIP option. So in reality, while the 300 disc changer can actually play 600 titles (with the FLIP option), the 400 disc changer can only play 400 titles. I don't think anyone currently makes any new model 300+ disc changer with a FLIP option, and I'm seriously considering getting a 4th one of the same model. Anyway, here's a link I found where they still sell them:

I would also like to see double sided dual layer DVD.
Don't forget that DVD is not only video media.
Back in 1994 when I got my first CD recorder, capacity of largest
IDE drive was 540 MB (of course, since CDRs in those days were only SCSI, I also had 2GB SCSI HDD).
That means that whole IDE drive could have been backed-up on one CD.
But these days, when average HDD is between 80 and 160GB, (and there are 250GB and 400GB on the market), backup solution is non existent.(except for some tape systems, which costs like couple of computers)
It would be nice to have 17GB DVD as solution for data storage.
