I've just bought the 632 DVD/DivX player and I downloaded the firmware update from philips.com
I also opened the tutorial, and there it says
The upgrade version of this software is Version 0112
but my player is version is 05xx. Is this update newer or older?
The filename: "dvp632_02_fus_eng"
Is it safe to update with this new firmware from philips.com?
Oh, and I just found some movies which don't play right (the sound's ok but the image is distorted, it's jerky, and you can't see anything, it's just as tons of colours are being mixed together). Both movies are XviD (probably 1.0.3).

Philips seems to name their software releases using a Month/Date pattern. Confusing, but 0112 (Jan 12 2005) is more recent than 1109 (Nov 09 2004).

is there any other place than philips.com where I can get an updated firmware?

As far as I'm aware the 1109 firmware dated 30 Nov 04, is still the most up to date version. As detailed on Philips's web site: -
http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/support/cons_product_support_detail.jsp?country=GB&productId=DVP630_05_GB_CONSUMER&catalogType=CONSUMER&language=en
As to why Philips is detailing readme information for 0112 firmware (dated 05 Jan 05) is beyond me, when it does not seem to be available!
It appears that the 1109 firmware only adds MacroVision, so it's hardly worth installing. And stupidly I did not remember to make a note of the firmware before 1109.
Anyway, for more information about players incorporating ESS chip-sets look here: -

Key Features added in this software version:
♦ Support external subtitles for DivX with the following fonts supported - Latin 1, Latin 2 and Cyrillic (Refer to Instructions for use)
♦ Support DivX Video on Demand (VOD)
♦ Enhanced performance for DivX/MPEG-4 video files
♦ Support external subtitles for DivX with the following fonts:
* CP1254 - Albanian, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, Gaelic, German, Italian, Kurdish (Latin), Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

The question is if Macrovision is still there... probably yes.

Thanks for the confirmation castellanos,
I've amended the link on my ESS chip-set information thread...
I would assume MacroVision will be included in this firmware update also (and is directed at those who did not get round to installing the previous update).
I wonder what "Enhanced performance for DivX/MPEG-4 video files" is all about?
Have anyone tested whether AAC audio in .MP4 and PAR/DAR signalling detection is working yet?

Jefferson Ryan gave an interesting link to the ESS Vibratto II cip-set here (http://www.esstech.com/products/AVplayer/Prod_Briefs/pb6698.pdf) .
In the Features is written:
MPEG AAC and Multichannel...
What does it mean?
Greetings! :D

I think we must to do a lot of requests if we want to get something...
However: "Enhanced performance for DivX/MPEG-4 video files" is has nothing to do with AAC audio. I've tried already the new firmware (0112) with some aac/mp4 audio files (HE/CBR 192 Kbs). The player sees the files but, of course, can not play them... may be next time. :(

Does this player support multiple subtitles in the de-facto standard, and different formats? Like:
movie.avi
movie.swedish.srt
movie.english.sub
?

Yes, it supports both .sub/.txt and .str, but w/o any special features, like italics, or bold, or colour. It only displays the code (like {s:22}{Y:b}{C:$FF9966}).
And you must select the subtitle before you start the movie. You go to your sub file and press the subtitle button on the remote, then select the video file and hit OK to start the movie with subtitle.
I don't know what "Enhanced performance" has been added, because I have some movies (like Incredibles or the new Taxi) encoded with newer versions of XviD which play in a more than strange manner (the sound is fine, but the picture is b0rked. I'll post a pic when I have time).
