Well it's impossible to answer that, it depends on the matrix in the first place. Still, the bigger the better... My "adequate" range goes from 40% to 85% depending, so I'm afraid I can't vote.

Ok here goes...Bits per pixel, resolution, comp-test and all other arbitrary measurements used for determining the quality of an encode at bitrate X are NEVER 100% correct, or even 90%. The Only sure fire way is to try different settings (in your case bitrate) and find out what looks good too YOU. Questions like "What combresability is most adequate" cannot be answered because in truth the answer is a little different for *every* source and *every* person. In short the only way to find the right answer for your question is to find it out for yourself.

Hey dont mind your input --- I know the question is rather open ended, however I just trying to get a general feel of what I should be aiming for. Yea I know it depends on the source, scene, etc, however for each movie its going to be different. Transcoding takes a long process, and unfortunately its almost impossible (due to time contstraints) to generate a bunch of avi's with different settings. Im trying to default to others without having to re-invent the wheel (so to speak!).

In that case most people find that 75% is a good place to start.

I don't use compressibility at all. I just sort of play it by eye ;). I pretty much know but now what sort of movie is going to be difficult to compress or easy. I have been able to get wonderful looking quality even when the compressibility test is 50% or even less and bit pixel ratio is like less than 0.15. These are just sort of general rules of thumb which can be bent or even broken given the right situation.

65 - 80 % is the ideal range for getting a reasonable Q. It depends so much on settings, framesize and other stuff, indeed. :)
