TV 2 DVD Recorder 2 AVI (minus) commercials

Hello.
I have been using my DVD Recorder on my TV to copy tv shows to dvd.

I then would like to make them into AVI's for smaller filesize.

Questions:

1. What is the easiest way to make the VOB file or then entire DVD that i made into an AVI

2. How do i cut commercials from the AVI file.
