Now that I have backed up a couple DVDs successfully, I am looking at the process, and not understanding the very first step in the guide --- why is it necessary? It seems redundant.

Step 1) Make an ISO from DVD Decrypter.
Step 2) Mount that ISO with Daemon Tools
Step 3) Use DoitFast4U to DEMUX the ISO.

What I dont get, is you can go right to step 3. You can use Doitfast4U to look at the DVD itself, and DEMUX directly into your output directory.

It looks like a redundant, unneeded step that just takes up an extra 8GB of harddrive space. Im sure theres a good reason for it, but I dont know what it is.

Could someone explain? I just want to learn as much as I can about this stuff. Thanks!

if you feel this step is uneccessary, well then it is totally up to you.

however there are two main reasons why i would recommend it:

1. in the immortal words of Eyes`Only's comprehensive help file (if you haven't read it, then i suggest you do .. NOW) · To save wear and tear on your DVDRom/DVDR drives, a user must use DVD Decrypter to create an .iso and then mount it using Daemon Tools (or similar). and
2. if you accidently delete/overwrite a file, you have instant access to it on your hard drive. otherwise you will have to go get the original ... load it ... etc etc.

Not to mention some of the more recent utilites that examine the .vob's before demuxing can't handle encrypted files and are rendered useless.

Yes you can do it from the original
Yes many users do
Yes if you have a problem, demuxing to an iso first will be the first thing we'll recommend

Fair enough. I'll continue to go the ISO route first (and have done so on my last 3 backup attempts).
