I've read through lots of messages talking about problems using XviD with Premiere Pro. I decided to try it for myself. I installed the codec on my editor, then used a transcoder to compress some video with XviD, and imported it into PPro. I was able to scrub through this video, cut frames and assemble a sequence, and render the sequence to a DVD. I didn't see any problems. However, if I asked PPro to render an MPEG using the XviD codec, it would hang. The XviD status display would pop up, but PPro was dead before it rendered frame 1.
I'm not surprised there was a problem. I've had lots of problems with PPro and codecs (I just had to update my MPEG2 codec that shipped with PPro because it was crashing). I don't have PPro set up on a machine suitable for debugging, but I could probably arrange that. Is anyone else looking into this? I've seen lots of people who have reported it, but I'd like to work with someone who is trying to fix it.
I don't understand the numerous comments that PPro can't deal with XviD at all - PPro can edit compressed video. You don't HAVE to use uncompressed video to edit, but it is a bit easier. If you edit a compressed video with PPro, you'll notice it scrubbing bacwards & forwards as it builds an I-frame where your cut was placed. It's somewhat annoying, but it DOES work.
