Hi! I have a problem... I have this anamorphic movie that I would like to burn to a DVD in 16:9 aspect ratio, but I would like it to display with the correct aspect on my TV.

The clip has an image size of 664 x 520 and a display size of 968 x 520

I want to encode it with mencoder to MPEG2 video in PAL format with an image size of 720 x 576 and a relative 16:9 display size (it should be 1024 x 576).

I figured out that I have to add black bands on top and on bottom of the original video, but I can't come up with the right math to get the exact numbers.

Can someone help me please?
Thank you,

giandrea

As I said, mencoder. In particular the ffmpegX GUI for mencoder (and ffmpeg) under MacOS X.

To ensure correct display of anamorphic Mpeg2 video we have apropriate flag (16:9). It means that pic. will be stretched vertically to 3/4 size by playback.
Is that 664x520 means size of your clip with square pixels?
Is it from DVD or is captured? In which res is captured?

All this is important to calculate correct values.

720x576 will give 4:3 ratio. Anamorphic 720:576 will give 16:9 ratio.
Square ratio would be 768x576.
I hope it will help.
