View Full Version : What's the best method of backing up a dual layered disc?

Can someone explain the best method to backup a dual layed disc onto a DVD+R DL disc? I'd like an exact copy, layer break in the same spot and all. Someone told me to rip the DVD with the latest version of DVD Decrypter in ISO mode and then just write it on the the DVD+R DL disc. Would this method make an exact duplicate? Thanks for the info.

I'd be curious to know as well, seeing as I just got my first DL burner yesterday.

Yes, it will. I did it twice, it works really good.
You probably read it in one of my posts, as I recommend that method for 1:1 copies.

Make sure you use Verbatim Disc's or you will get problems at the layer break;)

And it's always useful to set the bookmark to DVD-ROM, if you can.

Thanks for the replies. Where exactly on DVD Decrypter can we set the bookmark to DVD-ROM? Thanks again.

Carlos.

In Iso write mode, directly to the right of the burn speed drop down is a tiny little button shaped like a book. You need a compatible burner for this as well I believe, for instance, my nec 3250 registers in there, but it won't allow me to change it since I think only the hacked firmware allows this so far, and I'm using the factory fw still.

Thanks for the info fOZf8. Would you (or anyone else for that matter) happen to know if Nero Burning ROM also has a "bookmark to DVD-ROM" option, and if so, how to set it? Thanks again!

Actually that's book type (not bookmark) and the latest Nero does have it. Recorder/Choose Recorder/Options.

You can also download a utility to do it separately of the burning app:

ok so for a dl 1:1 dvddecryter is the best choice..

but what if you have the ifo/bup/vob files on your hdd.. for example after authoring...

whats the best way to burn the files to dl dvd+r in that case?

@Lev:
I am not sure what happen when you burn the files directly with Nero... I heard that Nero insert deliberately a layer break (not really sure about it).
I think the best solution for you is to create an ISO file from your DVD files with UltraISO, ISOCreator or another known program and then burn it into a DVD dual layer media (Verbatim the best at the moment) with DVD Decrypter. That should work!
Greetings! :)

What if I want to do a direct 1:1 copy of a dual layered disc, but I want to remove the restrictions the original disc gave me, like being able to skip FBI warnings, be able to use the MENU buttons at anytime, etc, etc...Would using DVD Decrypter in ISO mode still be the way to go? Any special settings?

I am ripping DVD in DVD Decrypter file mode (not ISO).

Than using IFOEdit to remove restrictions.

Than "Get VTS Sectors" in IFOEdit (THIS IS A MUST!)

After that, burn with Nero like any other DVD.

This works perfectly with my Pioneer 108, Nero 6.31.25, Verbatim DL media.

PUO's can be removed with DVD Decrypter anyway.

So just enable the options if that's what you want to do and use ISO Read -> ISO Write.

LIGHTNING UK! Could you tell me exactly what settings I need to setup in ISO read/ISO write in order to burn an exact duplicate of a DVD-9 disc, but without any restrictions? Thanks.

You just need to tick all (both!) the PUO removal options on the ISO Read tab in the settings.

In other words, only "Remove IFO Structure Protection" should remain unchecked, correct?

Yeah.

No need to remove anything from the IFO files... after all, the original works doesn't it?!

Just one thing. Removing VOB PUOs can make the little camera icon display on a multi-angled VOB.

See http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=91808

I'd only remove IFO PUOs (and kill playback on the FBIs are studio intros). Those DL disks are still pretty expensive!

Hi, I have Nero 6.6.0.6 and there is no option to change Book Type like u said(Recorder/Choose Recorder/Options).
My friend has Nero OEM older version, installed on new computer by some company and he had something what I want too: When he's burning DVD-Video,Nero changes automaticly Book Type for DVD-ROM!!!!

I want this as well, but I didn't find it neither in manual for Nero!
Does anybody know, how to do it?

I have an NEC 2510A DVD+/-RW DVD writer with firmware version 1.07. This version does not allow me to change the book type with DVD Decrypter. Does anyone know where I can find the appropriate firmware that will allow such a change with my drive? Thanks for the info.

Carlos.
