I was doing a little bit of reading about how to convert home videos to a DVD.here is a quote by someone:

Yes, there is software that can do some (if not all) of what you want. Most of the consumer video editing software tools can aid with video capture and can encode, author, and even burn DVDs. One example is Ulead VideoStudio -- consumer grade software that is relatively inexpensive, and available for download with a 30 day trial (www.ulead.com).

But you also need hardware -- lots of space on a hard drive, of course -- but also mandatory is the ability to capture analog video.

Capture requires either internal PC equipment (a PCI-slot video capture card, typically, or in some cases, a graphics card that includes video-in capability, such as ATI "all-in-wonder" cards), or outboard equipment such as a DV camcorder with a firewire (IEEE 1394) connection to your PC. Your viao, being a laptop, is unlikely to have any video-in capability, and unlikely to be able to accept a PCI card. But, you may be able to use outboard equipment.

For much more information, see the sticky threads in the Capture Forum, and, if interested in using a DV camcorder for this purpose, you should see the sticky threads in the DV Forum.

Can the camcorder be replaced with a digital camera? I have an ATI 9800 Pro video card,so I would have to buy a video capture card---but I dont have a camcorder.Is it possible to convert VHS movies to DVD without the use of a camcorder?Also, I have a Soundblaster 2 ZS Platinum Pro soundcard---would that be beneficial?

You don't need a camcorder, just an analog capture card with S-Video input.

would this be an analog capture card:

if it is,do I even need to buy it if I have an ATI 9800 Pro 128 mb video card? It is found here:

Hmmm... old quote. If I remember correctly, I learned that VAIOs have a proprietary capture capability.

Yes the device at Newegg is an analog capture card, using the BT878 A->D chipset.

And no, the ATI card you have is not a VIVO (Video In Video Out) card. ATI's VIVO cards have "All in Wonder" branding.

A lot of HD space isn't always necessary, as many card/software combos can encode directly to MPEG formats. Latest cards are amazing and cheap.

P.S. for those who haven't looked at prices lately (at least in the USA), I recently priced a combo of hard drive and capture card at Newegg. The hard drive was a Samsung 40GB 7200RPM fluid bearing with 3-year warranty. The card had MPEG on the fly, S-video in, composite, even audio I think, and came with Cyberlink Powerproducer2 gold. Total for everything was US $78 shipped.

In fact, I strayed away from that and invested in an external analog/digital converter. I got a Canopus ADVC-100. My Sony digital video camera also has a built-in converter too. It can take inputs from a analog source and process it through the camera and output via USB to my computer. I use video capture softwares like Ulead Video Studio Pro or DVD Workshop.

Anyways, if you want to inquire on a capture card, I suggest you to peruse through the Capture Video forum (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=10) here at Doom9. ;)

@Mods

I really think this thread should be moved to that forum, don't you agree?
