View Full Version : Is this a plan to reduce the coaster count ?

Hi,
New here, I have been reading all I can and making many coasters as well as slowly upping the succesful count :)
Anyway I've been using dvddcrypter to extract in file mode to my hard disk. Then using dvdshrink to reauthor and extract the bits of the film I want etc to reduce the compression needed. shrink then uses nero 6.6 to burn. Now this is working ok although going anywhere near the PC while it's burning will end up in a dvd that doesn't even play on the PC. Now I have read about this pgcedit and the 32k gaps between the ifos and bups and wonder if this is causing me some problems. Would this work:
1.rip with dvd decrypt
2.extract what a want with dvdshrink to another disk layout on the h/d
3.open the results with pgcedit and create the iso on the h/d
4.burn with dvdcrypter, then the iso created in stage 3 can be reburnt to create multiple copies, which is what I want in the end.
Thanks for any replies, I have tried to find the answers before posting :)

why not just output to iso from dvdshrink and then burn that with dvddecrypter ?

also if you are getting lots of coasters make sure you are buying reasonably good quality media. second burn at no faster than x2.

Hi thanks for the reply, yes I see now that would cut out the pgcedit stage, but would that leave the possibility of the 32k problem as mentioned here ? (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/blutach/Burning%20With%20PgcEdit.htm)

Quote from that link -
This problem does not affect disks which have VOBs for each and every titleset totalling 32K or more. However, crucially, it does affect ALL disks “reauthored” by DVD Shrink and Nero Recode (and possibly other one-click backup programs).

I must admit the media was cheap, about £7 for 25 discs, I'll have a search for some good media available in the UK :)
Thanks,

possibly but i have never personally had a problem if any dvds have been like that. if it worries you then do the PgcEdit stage aswell.

the better media and burning no faster than x2 with dvddecrypter are however non-negotiable. ;)

Definitely burn with DVD Decrypter and disable Nero burning in Shrink's options. I burn at 8X with good quality media and no problem....you need good quality media to do this though.:D

I burn exactly the way you have proposed (naturally - I wrote the guide on burning with PgcEdit :) ) and have never made a coaster this way.

If you post your Nero log (without the serial number), we can tell you what's going on with Nero, which can also help you with burning ISOs too (eg bad media, DMA off, out of date firmware). It's located in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero and called NeroHistory.log.txt

However, your plans to ditch Nero are sound and the PgcEdit method is the safest way to burn.

Hi thanks for the replies :) blutach, great guide  . I have now done 8 dvds in a row using that method and burning the ISO with dvddcrypter, not a single coaster. So this is the method for me from now on. Once again thanks for the excellent forum and information.
