I have two sysytems.
My first with an external DVD rewriter HP 300e.
My second as below with an NEC 3500 DVD rewriter.
When I back up using the HP I have no problems playing the back up on my standalone connected to my TV.
When I use the NEC 3500 which is DL it will not play back in the standalone. It will however play in the HP.
I am using Artia 4x DVD+R discs and the back up will play in the NEC and the HP.
Am I doing something wrong??

Thanks in advance.

hi and welcome to the forum

most likely i'd say, the nec doesn't like the media you used. so i recommend using another brand of media with the nec and see if that helps. pc drives are generally much more forgiving than standalones, so this would explain why your hp writer might still be able to read the nec burnered dvds...

Steve,

thanks for your reply and the welcome.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear.

I have used other discs with the same result.
The reason I used the Arita as an example, is when I backup using these discs on the HP, they play perfectly on the Pioneer standalone. Therfore I know the standalone reads them and doesn't have a problem with them. Also the Arita discs play perfectly in the NEC.

Thanks again.

hmm... ok... have you checked if there is a firmware update available for your nec??

It might also be a limitation or incompatibility with your standalone. See if there is any info for you in the databases at www.videohelp.com:

Thank-you both for your replies.

I have already downloaded the newest firmware I can get 2.18.
This has made no difference.

I have now checked the links and find no issues that would explain this.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Here appears to be the answer.
Thanks for your replies

Dear Customer,

This is likely to be a compatibility issue with your stand alone player and DVD+R media.
DVD disks created in the ND-3500A will keep the same booktype or bitsetting (DVD+R). However when you use the HP writer it must change the booktype/bitsetting to DVD-ROM so the DVD+R disk is seen as a DVD-ROM, which can be recognised by your stand alone player.

NEC do not supply any bitsetting software to allow you to change the booktype. The following article from our faq pages explains why.

DvD Burner ND-Series - Is there a bitsetting tool available to
change Booktype from DvD+R/ +RW/ -R and -RW medias
to DvD-ROM?

The DVD writers we sell in Europe do not need a bitsetting tool because
they already set to the most compatible condition. But in some cases it
is not compatible to (older) hardware equipment or standalone DvD players.

With ND-1000A and ND-1100A a burned DvD+R media will be characterized
automatically as DvD-ROM, but a DvD+RW will be characterized as itself.
All other DVD burner ND-Series marks DvD+R, DvD+RW, DvD-R and DvD-RW
as given. There`s no chance to change this settings.
