View Full Version : DVD backup doesn't play in standalone player

Hi folks,

after reading tons of guides I came up with what seemed to me a good way for backing up DVDs that would require a low compression setting in DVDShrink (<80%). But there is one problem: The DVD I made as a test does not play in a standalone player. So can anyone give me a hint or two what to do that it would play correctly (with PowerDVD it's working fine!)?

So here is what I do:

1. Analyze the DVD with DVDShrink and remove all unwanted features, menus, audio tracks, etc. Make an ISO image without any compression.
2. Use DGIndex to de-multiplex the VOB files in the ISO.
3. Use TMPGEnc to reencode the video data.
4. Use IFOEdit to re-multiplex and author a new DVD.

Until here everything seems to be fine. This is the files I get:

VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
...

As far I as I remember to be playable in a standalone player there has to be a file VTS_01_0.VOB, right? But how do I get one? ;-)

TIA! Syrinx

I dont see why you go all around these features... why dont you just backup your dvd in dvdshrink , take all the stuff that yu dont want in there, and after burn your copy? It's much simpler like that

Also, is the copy on a DVD-r or DVD+R? Some standalone dvdplayers cannot read some of those formats, but the one in your computer might read all of them (because it's a burner...)

Hope this helps you out

actually, no, you do not need one. the vts_01_0.vob would contain any menu information for the vts_02 vob set. if you stripped off the menu, or it didn't have one in the first place, or it is included somewhere else, it doesn't need it to playback correctly. also, if it was really needed, i doubt the dvd would play in powerdvd.

so basically as muzik pointed out already, i'd also guess the problem to be a compatibility related error. so i'd suggest you try different media or different standalone players to see if the problem persists...

Thanks to both of you for your quick reply!

The DVD I want to backup would have to be highly compressed in DVDShrink and the loss of quality would be significant. So I ended up reencoding it using a real MPEG2 encoder as opposed to a transcoder like DVDShrink. Now it nicely fits on a DVD-5 and you can hardly see it is a backup. This is why I take the 'little detour'.

The standalone player is a friend's as I don't own a player yet. It should read all type of media. At least this is what they claim. Maybe I will have to check it back with different media and players as you suggested.

Thanks, Syrinx.

thats right...

so the way i see it, your dvd is just fine, i think its your dvd player that cannot read the type of disc...

It could be a media incompatibility with the player, or the burner.
