I tried doing Mulan 2 with 0.76 (QuEnc 0.59 beta 2), and wound up with 3 gb in VIDEO_TS. Had "Half-D1 and Half Space for Extras" checked.

You probably going to be asked this eventually, but what version of the decoder are you using? If you have to try and have the lastest, it seems you can use 1.2.0 RC1 at your own risk. Other than that use the recommended one.
BTW, what is the quality difference between the old and new decoder? If newer ones are being developed, what kind of improvements do they have? I don't really see any discussions on it so I though I would ask here.

I'm not sure RB is currently supporting QuEnc 0.59 beta 2. Try with QuEnc 0.57

You set the extras to half/half, removed audio tracks, and the main movie was less than 4GB to begin with. You had a 71% encode that was improved by 36% due to the half/half. It's probably small because it resized 100% and was still smaller than a DVD-5. DVD-RB won't resize above 100% of the original bitrate.
Just guessing.

lol.. nice
just a thought, here is a great reason why it would be nice to be able to "uncheck" a title to not reencode, so you could just half d1 the extras and leave the main movie intact.
-just a thought

VTS_01* totalled 3,977,545,728 bytes before-hand; it totalled 2,492,665,856 afterwards. The only stream that would have been stripped out is the French audio, which (according to Shrink) is 219 meg. It seems to me that there's over a gig squeezed out of the movie unnecessarily.

Second movie I tried was Star Wars VI - Return of the Jedi, and that was also undersized (although not as badly).

There's no DTS; the only audio to be stripped would be French (193 MB). There are 3 angles, but only 2 sets of cells where multiple angles are used. These are 1:34.04 and 0:28.0 seconds, respectively.

Argh - I just deleted the Mulan2 D2VAVS directory, to make room for another try. (I might have it on the DVD I cut; I'll check tonight.)
The one from the Return of the Jedi is:

Well, I had only upgraded to 0.59b2 because the newer Rebuilders weren't supporting QuEnc 0.54. Now that 0.76 does, I'm retrying with QuEnc 0.54.

Incidentally - do the results of Phase 1 depend on which version of QuEnc is being used? If not, might I suggest you check the version at the start of phase 2? And if it does, you might want to compare at the start of phase 2 with what you saw at the start of phase 1, in order to prevent reports of strange phenomena by us poor dumb users.
(I had started the new build, then remembered I needed to revert to the older QuEnc and did that while phase 1 was processing. When it got to phase 2, I got the QuEnc pop-up complaining about mpeg2mux. I tried quitting and restarting in 3-click mode, but got the same thing. Had to do the first phase over again in order to get Rebuilder to not pass that parameter to QuEnc.)

The problem is that there is no way I can check the version from software. All versions except v0.54 report the same.

But (as of 0.76,) you do check for 0.54, and avoid specifying the -mpeg2mux when that version is being used. However, it appears that this check is done during phase 1, whereas QuEnc is invoked during phase 2. So if 0.54 is present in one of the 2 phases and a different version is present in the other, you'll be making the wrong decision regarding the -mpeg2mux parameter.
Note: If you want to say that changing versions of QuEnc in between phases is a dumb thing to do, and you're not going to address this, I'm fine with that. I'm just pointing out the issue.

However, it appears that this check is done during phase 1, whereas QuEnc is invoked during phase 2. Don't know where you got this idea. The check is done immediately before the encoding in phase 2...

I tried reproducing this, and I couldn't.
(The first time, when I saw the problem, I had unpacked 0.54 over 0.59b2 during Phase 1 in one-click mode; the second time, I ran Phase 1 in 3-click mode, quit, and overlaid 0.54 over 0.57, then started up QuEnc again, and started phase 2 with no problem. If I can come up with a reproducible scenario, I'll let you know. Right now, I'm just confused.)

Summary: Using QuEnc 0.57 and 0.59b2, I got undersized results; QuEnc 0.54 seems fine. I don't know if the problem is with QuEnc or Rebuilder, but I'll be sticking with 0.54 for now.
@jdobbs - let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to provide before I blow away the test directories.

Sorry to report that it didn't help with the above, at least for QuEnc 0.59b2.

Didn't help with QuEnc 0.57a either; still undersized.
On the bright side, I was able to drop the min_bitrate setting from the Rebuilder.ini file, and didn't have QuEnc crash, so that fix is working for me.

sorry to drag this older thread back up but anyone experiencing undersizing with QuEnc versions after 0.54 should try 0.59 beta 4. some of the settings have been changed back to older values etc. so now 2 pass should be sizing better.
if you have any problems, or even posative results then please report them here
