View Full Version : Upping the reduction level?

I am using Rebuilder for months and months now, with great success!
Now I am trying to make a copy of Pink Floyd's The Wall.
Using version 0.75, One Pass VBR (w/analysis) and CCE SP.
I choose "dynamically assign cell bitrates" and did not choose "steal space from extra's" or "half-d1 or half space for extra's"
Still I get this result:
- Reduction Level for DVD-5: 37,8%
- Overall Bitrate : 1.601Kbs
- Space for Video : 2.035.036KB
total size VIDEO_TS after encode 4.625.973.248 bytes
I am "used" to reduction levels of over 50%.
Is there a way to up this level (there is no DTS to be removed) or am I doing something "not in the best way"?

- VTS_01: 113.913 sectors.
- VTS_02: 68.466 sectors.
- VTS_04: 2.281.766 sectors.
- VTS_05: 1.076.617 sectors.
- VTS_06: 32.498 sectors.
(encode log available if needed)

I think this dvd has a ac3 but also has a PCM track PCM takes just as much space as a high quality DTS track, also check the menu Vobs, there is a easter egg (http://www.dvdreview.com/eastereggs/collect/137.html) that could take up much space (VTS_0X_0.VOB's).

Happy easter :D

i its this
http://www.thewalldvd.com/pr.html

then it says
new 5.1 channel Dolby Digital and PCM stereo soundtracks
so yes the PCM audio would be taking quite some room so you may want to strip that and see what reduction level you get then.

A lot of these concert and music-centric DVDs use an LPCM track as the default. They are easy to remove and there is always an AC3 track with the same audio. But you since the LPCM is the default, when you remove it the playback is silent if you don't manually change to another track.

I'm looking at adding some code to change the pointers in the IFOs so you can modify the alternate track. In the meantime, I've been using IFOEDIT (Derrow lives on) to make the changes.

Thanks for all this info......!

Is this changing in IFOEDIT and stripping of the PCM audio easy to do? I'll have to look these things up, so if any of you has experience with it (or knows some interesting links for it) I'll be much obliged!

Stripping is simple -- just deselect it in DVD-RB. You have to know how to do the audio changes in the IFOs. There are some good guides on it here at Doom9. Search for "changing default audio" or something to that affect.

Or, you can do it the lazy man's way, and strip the audio out in DVDshrink first, with NO COMPRESSION, and save that out and load it into DVD-RB. Somehow DVDShrink will make the audio track that is the highest number that is left on the disc the default track, and your DVD player won't even allow you to select the audio tracks that are removed if you try to cycle through them with the AUDIO button on the remote!

I used to manually set the default audio track in Ifoedit (32768), which was usually the DTS track which I always keep over the Dolby Digital track, but it always annoyed me that I could still choose the Dolby Digital track with the AUDIO button on my DVD remote, and then get no audio...somehow, DVDshrink 3.2 will take that DTS track, and make it the default (assuming I removed DD track #1, and the DTS track is #2), and not allow access to the removed audio track(s). On a disc where I've chosen to keep just the DTS track, if I choose the DD track from the menu, it still plays the DTS track! :D

I'm sure there are ways to do this manuualy with Ifoedit, but I find this works great for me! :)

Or you can use DVD Decrypter and change the audio streams numbers to put the AC3 on the 0X80. but to do this you must know which one is the AC3 but I think that decrypter can show you that too... anyway... it will be better to use IFO Edit to change the name too.

Well I removed the LPCM stream using the normal deselection in Rebuilder. To my astonishment the reduction level now was 59,1%!
So a far better result. When playing the result on my PC the sound was normally heard...... As the LPCM is track 2 I guess the AC3 is the default.
And forgive my ignorance: is LPCM the same as Dolby 5.1 track?

Months ago I browsed to some guides for IFOEDIT. I think I'll look them up again to get to know more about the possiblities in there.

And jdobbs: if switching those channels is that easy (so I'm told..... ;) ) would it be possible to do this together with deselecting those LPCM streams? Just a thought...... :)

Thanks again for the info you all!!!!!!

Hi-

...is LPCM the same as Dolby 5.1 track?

No, it's WAV audio, is very good quality, but takes up way too much space when backing up to DVDR.
