After reading "codec shoot-out 2004" at doom9, another question appeared in my mind - Who dominates at lower bitrate?
By this what i mean is to convert a dvd to size around 200~300MB, or maybe other video sources e.g. TV shows, TV series, etc. I know some people may think this is unnecessary - who wants to rip a dvd into something even less than a cd? however, i dont know if many people have noticed, as a chinese myself, people still pretty much love watching videos and movies in RM or RMVB format. they often convert dvdrip to rmvb. i guess this is really due to the lack of internet bandwidth and storage space. also in asia, most of the TV shows and TV series are released in VCD format(usually 1 episode per cd) in market, so people usually backup 2 ep onto 1 cd to save space.
i remember long time ago i once a read a chinese article about comparsion codec in lower bitrate range, and they concluded that in example of backing up dvd(>=4GB). XviD definitely is the best choice when backup file size is greater 600MB, but at lower biterate, RMVB wins! i have to say that the article was only a partial transship, in fact only a conclusion without showing any detailed testing setup and data.
so i wonder if anyone here are able to clearify this conclusion for me? true or not ture or unable to say?
P.S. this thread is only in discussion of "Who dominates at lower bitrate?", and i dont really want to get into the fight of wether one should backup a dvd at least with a full size of a CD.
Thank you.
