View Full Version : Getting widescreen button to highlight

I ripped FS from Young Black Stallion and deleted the FS button with menu edit. But when I play the DVD and come to the screen to select FS or WS, neither button is highlighted. If I just hit enter/play, the DVD defaults to FS. I have to manually select WS then hit enter/play to get the DVD to work right.

So how do I get the WS button to be highlighted by default?

Also this menu was hidden in VTS_02_1.VOB, why wasn't this menu in the _0.VOB file like all the other menus?

Hi BobZhome,
i'm no expect in this but if you check out this guide
Removing Language Selection and Aspect Ratio Menus v3.0 (http://home.tiscali.be/debie.roland/pgcedit/third_party/2cool/remove_language_aspect_ratio_menus/remove_language_and_aspect_ratio_menus_intro.htm) (Courtesy your friendly neighbourhood 2Cool)
it might give you some ideas on want you have to do.

If you don't want to follow the 2COOL method, try the jeanl method of going straight to the menu/title (http://jean.laroche.free.fr/Jumping0.4.3.1/index.html). Use this in conunction with 2COOL's prog Jump2PGC, which can be obtained here (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html).

Alternatively, if you want to retain the original navigation, you can insert a precommand as the last one in the PGC that contains the aspect ratio menu, as follows:

(Assuming WS is button 2)

[56 00 00 00 08 00 00 00] 1 (SetHL_BTN) Set Highlighted Button =(mov) 2048 (button 2) Make sure that there are no breaks/link to programs before the execution of this command. If there are, they will need to be redirected to this command with a GOTO.

Thanks for the response! That code worked great.

I would have liked to use 2COOL's "Removing Language Selection and Aspect Ratio Menus v3.0", but without pressing the WS button I can't use it.
So is there a command/code to get the WS button to be pressed?

Thanks for the help

As you can see from the image below, I deleted FS button and added blutach code.

If so, I can't give it. PGCedit will not let me view it. PGC will let me view VTSM, but not VTST.

Note: We still could've made it work by using DVD Remake Pro to view the button commands as PgcEdit is limited right now on viewing BOVs. All we needed was the button command and the VOB and Cell ID of it.

Hello gang, grasshopper here.

Now that BobZhome's been looked after, I would like to query a relevant matter. Alien v Predator with 2 versions, theaterical or extended version which is un-worthy anyway. Root menu has no buttons, there are two other dummy menus each with 6 buttons. The first menu is linked with a bit of intro which I was unable to trim:D and this menu is only accessed once! The second menu set is used the rest of the time. I have been cheating with unregistered Menuedit in disabling buttons:o . There is just no way to disable the Extende Version button on the first menu set for it does not show up in Menuedit. I wonder why......

Sidenote: still working up the courage to open a paypal....

Hmmm...I just did this DVD (R1) last night and I didn't get rid of both versions though. I used DVD Shrink after getting rid of other extras and unwanted audio. I look at it when I get home. What version are you referring to?

Surf
11th February 2005, 22:03
Mine's a DVD9 R1 region too. This movie has a theaterical version(title1)and the extended version(title2, ILV thingy). The extended one is just a little chapter at the beginning which shows that Predator visited Earth in 1903 at a whaling station in Antartica. No big deal of a clip.

This is not the 1st time that one of the two MAIN MENUS won't show up in MenuEdit which will show up as 0 buttons. However the 2nd MAIN MENU will show and is editable. I would find it hard to comprehend why this happening, registered or not.

Well, through your tutor-lage, if the play extended version button is pressed it would loop back to the menu. Translation, choice not available :p .

@2COOL and Surf:
Is PgcEdit 0.5beta7 able to find the menu buttons not found by MenuEdit?

@everybody interested to see the BOVs with PgcEdit:
V0.5.0 beta 7 is available here (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/versions/PgcEdit_winexe_0.5.0beta7.zip). There are still some bugs, especially in trace mode, when trying to execute some BOV commands, but this beta is already usefull to find and inspect the BOVs.

[EDIT:] New beta 8 available. See here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89918).

I have a question in connection with the original question posted above by BobZhome:

I have a number of DVDs containing movies for kids, which I'd like to make easier for my little son to play in our standalone player. The easiest way would be to author a new DVD with the movie only. But I'd like to keep the various languages on the disc AND the main menu.

I'm thinking one way would be to add some commands to the language selection menu so that the button for my native language is automatically highlighted AND automatically selected, too, if the user haven't touched anything within xx seconds. And then the same with the "Play Movie" button in the main menu.

But which commands do I use, and how exactly do I do it? I know how to locate the menus in question, but I'm a nOOb when it comes to editing/adding commands. (I have MenuEdit 2.3.0 (full version) and PgcEdit 0.5.0 beta 10)

Woohoo! I can help CoNS on this, lol, with 2COOL's guide (http://home.tiscali.be/debie.roland/pgcedit/third_party/2cool/jump2pgc/Jump2Pgc%20Guide.htm) . It works like magic and if I can do it then so can anyone. About your native audio, me thinks it's automatic for your dvd standalone player is defaulted to Norge/Swenka/Finn/Dane.....

Thanks for the link, Surf, but that's not really what I want to do...

I don't want to bypass the menus, I'd like to highlight a specific button and then set a timer for the button...

Another approch is this one. You may edit the VOB file and the IFO to autoselect the button you want by default.

1. Locate the menu in PgcEdit, and open the menu buttons viewer. Note the number of the button you want activated by default.
2. Place and hold your mouse pointer over the topmost button in the window (the button with the PGC label). You will see a tooltip with the first LBA. Note that number. Exit the viewer.
3. Double click on the menu PGC to open the PGC Editor, and locate the cell with the menu. If the cell still time is 0, leave it as it is. If it is > 0, set it to the number of seconds you want the menu displayed, but less than 255. Accept by clicking OK.
4. Save and quit PgcEdit.
5. Open the menu VOB file in VobEdit. Jump to the LBA you noted in step 2, and enable the "Button" checkbox.
6. At offset 00a1 and 00a2, change the force select button number and the force action button number to the number you noted in step 1.
7. Quit and test.

The button should be highlighted by default, and if you wait until the menu has finished playing, and/or until the still time is over, it will be automatically selected, and the playback will continue normally.

This method works for sure for a still frame menu.
Normally, if your menu is animated or has audio, you must modify all Nav Packs for the Cell/Vob ID of your menu, but generally it works fine if you change only the first nav pack.

Thanks for your response, r0lz. I've been very busy at work but will find the time to test it during the weekend.

About the VobEdit part: Will PgcEdit be able to do the same job with the button editing in the new version with BOV support? Or will I still need VobEdit?

r0lZ
18th February 2005, 13:49
At the moment, you still need VobEdit.
But when the menubutton editor will be finished, you will be able to do all that stuff inside PgcEdit. In fact, there will be a new Edit button in the menubutton viewer. In the edit window, all you will need to do is to change the force select and force action buttons values.
When you will save the DVD, all nav packs for the modified cells will be updated automatically (instead of only the first one, as explained above.)

CoNS, I still think 2COOL's guide and the JUMP2PGC proggy would make your life simpler. I'm speaking from 20 Walt Disneys with movie playing upon insert. The last 10 I have insert the THX clip to get me boys all tuned for the action. Aren't they spoiled rotten:p . If I am not mistaken about dvd standalones, if one set the OnScreenDisplay say Swedish(language) and your movie contains the Swedish audio/sub, then the movie would display Swedish automatically.

r0lZ here is teaching you how to stand on the sword, same as Uma Thurman in Kill Bill 2. :D

@r0lz: ahh, sounds good with that menu button editor in PgcEdit!!

I followed your instructions carefully in order to modify a langauge selection menu (no animations, only a still pic), and I think I got it all right the way you described. I've only had time to test the result in my software player (MPC), but there it didn't work. Clearly, the menu times out after the xx seconds I set in the PGC editor, but after that the menu hangs and doesn't proceed to the main menu.

I was a bit unsure whether the values for the force select button number and the force action button number should be exactly the same as I see it in PgcEdit, or if it should be reduced by 1 (so that button no. 1 is value 00 etc.). I tried both ways and the menu hangs either way.

Also, as I'm not familiar with VobEdit, I was a bit unsure if the program actually saved my changes. There's no "Save" button, but it looks like the changes to the vob file are saved when I press "Close"?

Any idea what could be wrong? Just to be sure that it doesn't work with my particular DVD, I'll burn and test it in my Sony standalone later tonight.

EDIT: Ok, I just tried another DVD, and this time it worked (tested in my software player, too). I did it exactly the same way. Hmmm, I wonder what other modifications I have to do to the first DVD in order to make it work?

@ Surf: Well, it's what r0lz described that I want!! I don't want to bypass and blank the menu, I want to time it out...

r0lZ

Hum. Should work.

Are the Highlight End Time and Button Selection End Time values at -1 in the VOB (at offsets 93 and 97)? If not, rememebr the current values and set them to -1.

- In the VOB, the buttons are numbered starting at 1.
- VobEdit saves all changes directly, whenever you edit a value.

Ok, I've tried 3 different discs now, where I've edited the language selection menu (all of them with still pics only, no animations) very carefully following your above instructions. One of the discs (disc #1) worked perfectly both in software and standalone player.

Another of the discs (the first one I described above, lets call it disc #2) keeps hanging in my software player after the cell timeout. Haven't tested in my standalone. Here are the commands of the menu from PgcEdit:

Well, I don't know why it doesn't work, but you may try this:

For Dics #2, change pre command 6 (Set gprm(8) *=(mul) 1024) to:
Set gprm(8) =(mov) 3072
You may also have to add a LinkPGCN PGC 5 in the post commands.

For disc #3, change pre command 1 (Set gprm(0) =(mov) sprm(16:Preferred audio language)) to:
Set gprm(0) =(mov) 25697 ("da")

This configures the GPRM that is used to store the preferred language to danish.
Note that in both discs, the sprm(16:Preferred audio language) is used to retrieve your preferred language in the player's configuration. So, if your standalone is correctly configured, the changes above are not needed. But that may help if your player doesn't have a preferred language option.

You still have to leave the force select and action buttons values in the VOBs to 3, to force the menu to terminate after the still time you configured in the cell table.

Nope, that didn't help... :( I tested it on disc #3 and no changes...

My standalone (Sony DVP-NS330) was actually set to

Language: Danish
Menu: English
Sound: English
Subtitles: Follow the sound

I then changed the two middle settings to Danish. But when I play disc #3 it still gives me English audio after the menu times out, even though the button for "Danish" (button 3) is marked/preselected in the player.

I then changed the precommand as you suggested (still talking about disc #3). I tested this in my software player, and it's the same as before: English audio.

What else could be wrong?

Well, thanks for taking the time to try to help, anyway. Much appreciated.

I wonder if it's my setup that prevents it from working, or if it's the method you described which just doesn't work with the structures of those discs I'm processing. I kinda have this feeling that it has something to do with a conflict between 1) the button settings stored inside the menu .vob file and 2) the PGC commands, but it's just a hunch, nothing more... Too bad, it sounded like the perfect solution to the goal I wanted to achieve. :(

One more thing. Send me your IFOs and the menu VOB. I'll try to understant what's wrong.
If the menu VOB is too big, strip everyting except the language menu.
My email address is on my homepage.

Ok, done.

r0lZ

OK. I've found the problem.
When the selection end time in the VOB is set to -1, setting the force action button do not work. The post commands are executed instead of the forced button command.

The solution:

You must change the button highlight end time and selection end time, at offsets 0x93 and 97 in the nav pack.
The value to use is:
([number of seconds before closing the menu] * 90000) + [current value of highlight start time]

For example, if the highlight start time is at 19336 and you want the menu displayed for 5 secs, then use (5 * 90000) + 19336 = 469336.

It is probably useless to change the cell still time in the IFO, so the trick works by changing the values in the nav pack only. You don't need to change anything in the IFOs.

Caution:

For a still menu, the still time in the IFO must be higher than the number of seconds used in the nav pack, or 255 (infinite).

If the menu is animated or has audio, the end time will probably not be -1, and the cell still time 0. You may lower the end time value to shorten the menu display if you want, but do not increase it. If you leave the value as it is, the button will be automatically selected when the menu has finished playing his first loop. [this last paragraph needs confirmation]

r0lZ, you're the man!! It works. :) Great, always wanted to add this feature to my kids' DVDs...

I only tested it with the still menus of those two discs that I mentioned, so I can't tell you if the tip for the animated menus work. But the behavior you described for these situations sounds reasonable.

So the reason why my disc #1 worked right away is because the highlight start time on this disc was 0 or -1?

BTW, on those two discs that I now got work, the highlight start time was 25854 in both cases... Some standard value?

So, in that case, the button don't need to be activated. If it is selected when the menu ends, everything is OK.

BTW, on those two discs that I now got work, the highlight start time was 25854 in both cases... Some standard value? I don't understand why this value is used. It doesn't make sense to me. But, with a still frame, the start time is generally equal to the VOBU presentation start time. And that make sense.
Anyway, if you add a delay to the current start time to calculate the end time, you will see the button highlight during the specified delay. Therefore, if the buttons are displayed only after some time, you will still have your requested delay to possibly select another button.

The first category has the same command for all buttons, and the second category has each button number integrated in the specific button command...

Can I follow the method you descibed in your post from this afternoon in both situations (to make it simple to remember)? Or do I have to follow the method you first described in your post a couple of days ago (leave Highlight End Time and Button Selection End Time values at -1, and set the cell still instead) in the cases that fall into category #1?

Most of the time, the unique command will be LinkTailPGC. If it's another command, the behavior may be different.

Or do I have to follow the method you first described in your post a couple of days ago (leave Highlight End Time and Button Selection End Time values at -1, and set the cell still instead) in the cases that fall into category #1? I think the second method works in all cases. Forcing the button command to execute by changing the action button number and the selection end time is exactly the same as activating the button with the remote, at the specified point in the playback.

I'm not sure you must also change the highlight end time, but it is useless to highlight the button after the end of the playback, so, I think it's a good idea. Also, setting the force select button to the same number as the action button is not really needed, but it's better to highlight the button which will be activated by default.

Note that, if you are happy with the default button selected by the DVD or the player, you do not need to change the force select and action buttons. Setting the delay is enough to activate the current button automatically. But if you have forced the action button, it will be activated if you wait until the delay is over, even if you highlighted another button with the remote.

Take care to set the delay not too long, or the activation will occur after the end of the playback, and will be useless. However, for still menus, as the still time is most of the time 255 (infinite), you should not encounter that problem.

Out of curiosity last night I called up a mister Lucas and also a mister Kubrick for they are still residing in the puter.

So I loaded each one into PGCedit, activated the TRACE mode, highlighted the movie with "Toggle the PGC playback breakpoint" and finally started the tracing. Clicked "close preview" one after another till I reached the main menu. Then I chose the language button, chose Francois, exit out to the main menu and activated the play button. Kept on tracing till I reached the main movie. Found out the unused GPRM and with the help of 2COOL's JUMP2PGC utility, I finalized the movie, saved it and tested it with NERO's Showtime softplayer. Mon dieu!! Certainment!

"Luke, mein tu papa!" <<< something like that, er...I made it up :D .

Point is, I got the movie to play upon insert and in French of choice.

Not good enough, CoNS?

@Surf: Hehe, no not good enough! :p I've used jeanl's very nice guide with great success where I wanted to bypass some menus. But the point is, with the discs I'm editing right now, I don't want to bypass the menus - I want the user to see the menu and have the choice to select from that menu, BUT if nothing is selected, I want the disc to proceed automatically to the next step within xx seconds.

This is so that both a kid can find out how to operate that movie and get his native language by simply inserting the disc in the player AND an adult or bigger kid get the choice of selecting the original language from the disc if desired.

r0lZ: Bad news... :scared: Looks like I was too fast with the happy reports of the last method you described for my disc #1 and 2. Initially I only tested it in my software player, where it worked as it should. BUT when I burn & test it in my Sony standalone, the menu doesn't time out. It doesn't hang or anything - I can select from the menu, but it doesn't time out. I'm still talking about the same still picture language selection menus...

As you know, the Sony standalones are usually very true to the official DVD specs so there must be something more/else that should be changed in the disc?

Could it be that both the ifo/cell time and the vob values should be altered at the same time? Right now my cell still time is back to 255...

One last thing: To be precise, I'd like to end up with a solution where the menu only times out if there's no user activity for xx seconds. So that if you start to cycle through the menu buttons with the remote, it doesn't time out until xx seconds after you stop. This gives you the time to think about which button to select... Is this how the already described methods work, or? I have some commercial DVDs where this feature is originally a part of the disc structure. If I send you the ifos/menu vob, would you be able to see how it's done?

Yes, try to lower the still time a little. The test I made was with a non-infinite still.

No. The sitll time must be higher (or exactly equal) to the action end time, or your menu will expire before the action has a chance to be carried on.
In my tests, the still time was 30, and the action end time approx 10 seconds.

But maybe the button end time must match exactly a number of frames, and therefore should be calculated accurately, with respect to the frame rate. I don't know.

@mpucoder: Any idea?

lol @adults or bigger kids.

By the time you solved this, you kid is grown up and is smart enough to choose the director's cut X-rated version menu !!!:D . Dumbo does Dallas. :D

I know a sure way of getting rid of CoNS for you r0lZ, complete that menu-editor! :D :D :D

A shot in the dark: note what triggers the Danish audio stream, create a cell command in the language menu which triggers that choice and link to one of the dummy vmgm which would then play the movie, with time out,.....I'll be vewy vewy quiet now.

I just did a couple of tests, but I still can't get it to work.

In VobEdit I've set my "Highland end time" and "Button selection end time" to 925854 as my "Highlight Start Time" is 25854, and as I want 10 seconds delay.

In the first test I set the cell still time to 15 seconds, and then burned and tested in my Sony standalone. The result: The menu timed out after 15 seconds but the wrong language was auto-selected (English instead of Danish).

In the second test I set the cell still time to 10 seconds. This time on my Sony the menu timed out after 10 seconds, but still with the wrong language selected.

When you say that "maybe the button end time must match exactly a number of frames, and therefore should be calculated accurately, with respect to the frame rate", what do you mean exactly? Which value should I try to set in the above mentioned case?

I have a workaround theory but I just want to inquiry on what your button command you have highlighted?

The button command of the button I highlighted is:

[71 01 00 08 00 02 00 0D] Set gprm(8) =(mov) 2 ; LinkTailPGC

I haven't been tracking this thread as of late but when I read it again, it seemed so simple to do. Well, I hope it is and as a disclaimer, I mentioned that I had a workaround theory. It was pretty much a slight deviation of page 2 (http://home.tiscali.be/debie.roland/pgcedit/third_party/2cool/remove_language_aspect_ratio_menus/remove_language_and_aspect_ratio_menus_2.htm) of my guide.

You already know how to initially highlight your button in question, if wasn't to begin with. Courtesy of blutach. Now let's work on your timed out menu. Follow page 2 of my guide but in step 14, change it to whatever seconds you want your menu to time out. I've read somewhere you wanted 10 seconds so input a 10. You don't need to do page 3 as that is for blanking the menu, which is not what you want.
