I'm just wondering, will Longhorn have a built in MPEG-4 splitter from the get-go?

Anything is possible. But I would hazard a guess not. Even though it is most likely that upcoming DVD formats will use some subset of MP4 as the container it has not been set in stone yet. And even then after all that it was only recently that MS finally allowed playback of DVD without installing 3rd party player software first. So it is quite possible that they might just provide a splitter etc capable of parsing just HD-DVD or BR-DVD and not MP4 in general. Or they might just repeat themselves and provide no splitter at all in order to try to force people to use their formats and codecs. As I said anything is possible.

Darn Micro$oft if they won't provide an MPEG-4 splitter because of their shitty codecs. Does anyone know from trying out the beta (or whatever) versions of Longhorn that are out by now?

i dont know one reason why m$ should by itself have an interest in supporting .mp4?

ok customer satisfaction, but well... :D

I'm sure it'll be fully equipped to handle WMV9 though ;)

With the first beta still several months off, and the final product 16+ months off, it is a bit early to think about such matters.

still with vc-1 now being an openstandard and vc-1 having a broad patentholder base i change my views on vc-1 a little (with wmv9 only being one implementation, ffmpeg offering a vc-1 decoder the second)
actually with having had a look at the specs i think it can be said its technically weaker than avc (especially with high profile)

after all, avc or vc-1, its all about getting our money ;)

I'm not sure if you should look at Longhorn if you want to see if MS will support MP4. WMP/DirectX updates are more important to keep an eye on i reckon.

Yes, DirectShow (the media frame work of MS) is installed with DirectX. All things that you can playback without installing other software is an effect of your DirectX installation. It includes AVI, MPG and WMV splitters, WMV/A and MP3 decoders and so on. And no, they do not install a MP4 splitter. But if a MP4 splitter is coming, it is coming from DirectX, not Longhorn.

Unless, MS would try to force me to upgrade to Longhorn by not providing DirectX updates for 2K/XP anymore.

All right, but I believe I have the latest Direct X since I've got SP2 installed on XP, and I did not have any MPEG-4 splitter available from right off the bat. Do you know when it'll be available?

sorry, read my edit... don't think it will be coming anytime soon. MS has no interest in supporting MP4 right now out of the box.

well a reason why m$ could do it came to my mind:

they release a splitter, but a totally crap one, one that only supports passing of lets say mp3 and simple profile video. or even better one that is not spec compliant (reminds me of "ms mpeg-4")
propably one that only connects to their "mpeg-4" and mp3 decoder

that way they could harm mpeg-4 a lot :D

Seriously though, how hard can it be to provide an MPEG-4 splitter for a brand new Operativ System? I mean, it's the MPEG-4 standard after all. If you ask me, I think it should be as mandatory as MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 is.

Again, you should see this completely separate from the OS, its not that MP4 wouldnt work on Win98 or something. Splitters are usually not very demanding.

MS just has no interest in MP4 as yet. Not so difficult to understand why i think.
