View Full Version : AVI doesn't fit on 1 DVD

I'm trying to convert a DivX movie to DVD using DVD2SVCD
It works flawlessly excpet for the fact that the resulting DVD iso doesn't fit on 1 DVD (over 5 gigs, while the original AVI is only 1.4).
What can I do?
I think it has something to do with the bitrate. I used this (http://www.videomontageforum.nl/bitratecalc/calculator.html) calculator which gives me a bitrate of 4255.
However, the bitrate tab has me a bit confused. Where should I fill in this value?
Most likely it should be max. avg.
Is this correct, because the default is 7000?

Hi Pieter
You should really check out D2Sroba to get movies to fit

Hi!
I sometimes had the same problem and used DVDShrink to make the files fit on 1 DVD.
Good luck!

I second that !

so it doesn't have anything to do with the settings on the bitrate tab?

Please post a logfile from an oversize conversion. It will show all the settings you used and should identify what is going wrong.
PS. You should not need to use any bitrate calculators with DVD2SVCD.

If you want to check it with a calculator try this
4 * 1024 * 1024 * 8 (total number in Kbits in 4GB)
DIVIDE this by the time (in seconds) of your avi
(for example a 2 hour avi is 7200 seconds)
This gives you a bitrate of 4660 Kbps (video AND Audio)
SUBTRACT the audio bitrate (for example 192 Kbps)
This gives you a video bitrate of 4468 Kbps. For best quality, the bitrate should be evenly divisible by 16 so...
4468 / 16 = 279.25
279 * 16 = 4464 for the best video bitrate

I will try using D2Sroba tomorrow
The logfile will be coming shortly after that ;)

The logfile will be coming shortly after that ;) I suggest you to start by getting acquainted to DVD2SVCD. The problem you describe, according to my dog (he is a clever dog), probably has to do with your DVD2SVCD setup. Also, a good start is :readguid: and :logfile:, in that order.

I use this guide: http://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/220351.php (and a looked at the guide of chickenman that's available on sevral forums).
And by the way: shouldn't the default setup give good results (maybe not the best, but that's a different story)

I don't think I have to post any logs.
D2SRoba did its work flawlessly. I converted the AVI to MPEG and it fits on one DVD as it should. Thanks for the tip.

Hi Pieter,
What "tip" did actually help you?

Using D2SRoba off course.
Using that plugin to DVD2SVCD I managed to keep the size within the desired limit (1 DVD).
I'm still puzzled why DVD2SVCD could, because I have successfully converted AVI's before.

As always
Really, a great complement to D2S
BTW - why not use the guide here at doom9.org ?
When I want a guide for anything encoding/capturing related, I always check here first for an appropriate guide (whether in the guides section or in a stickie in the appropriate forum) .. I guess I'm a fanboy :D
In any case, you might want to post the log anyway, just to satisfy your/our curiosity regarding why the oversize occurred

Well, that might be a problem, as I (foolishly) threw away the log :o

Since you said you used a calculator to enter the bitrate, it seemed to me you had not read any good guide whatsoever, since no calculations of that kind are needed with DVD2SVCD. You don't need to mess up with Max Avg or any other BR setting. That's one of the beauties of DVD2SVCD.
It was also clear to me that you did not read the stickies either, otherwise you'd have posted your log in the first place.
But since your problem was solved, I guess we can close the thread.
