would anyone happen to know if there is a standalone dvd player that resizes divx encoded movies to fit a 16x9 t.v? I own a phillips dvp642...I love the player but it does not work in divx format with my widescreen t.v. I have the dvd player set for 16x9 and it playes dvd's correctly but as far as divx goes it is stretched out.any help on finding a good player with this would be greatly appreciated....thanks alot...

I presume you're talking about Mpeg4 .AVI encodes containing PAR/DAR signalling?

If so, check out some of the players that include MediaTek chip-sets!

Cheers and welcome to the forum ;)

I don't think he does, I think what he wants (and so do I) is a player that does an anamorphic resize up of divx's so that when reproduced on an widescreen TV the AR is OK.

Let me see if I can explain it better. Most of the divx's are made for a PAR 1:1 / DAR 1:1 so that they can be seen correctly on a PC screen. That is almost right for a 4:3 TV, so that also works. But when you see that on a 16:9 TV you get everything widened.
There are 2 solutions for this problem: use the zoom to 16:9 function on the TV or resize the divx anamorphicaly.
The zoom function works but the resulting quality is low (in a CRT display, in an LCD/PLASMA less so).
A better solution is that the player resizes the video, stretching it horizontally on-the-fly, so when reproduced on a widescreen TV it gets a correct aspect ratio with a much better quality.
Does anyone knows of a standalone player that does that?

Most Mediatek,Sigma and Zoran based players can do that. But it depends also on model and firmware.
Only ESS based players cannot do it for sure.

Some that i tried:
Yamaha 550,elta 8883,elta 8882,Xoro 400pro,Xoro311pro,Philips 720SA

As Zhnujm confirmed, most players/chip-sets can indeed correctly display cropped and re-sized "square pixelled" encodes (that correlate with the aspect ratio of the source/movie), on a 16:9 wide-screen TV.

Examples of cropped and re-sized "square pixelled" encode sizes are as follows: - 688x288 = 2.39:1 (near as damn to 2.40:1)
672x288 = 2.33:1 (near as damn to 2.35:1)
528x288 = 1.83:1 (near as damn to 1.85:1)
512x288 = 1.77:1 (aka 16:9)
448x288 = 1.55:1 (aka 14:9)
384x288 = 1.33:1 (aka 4:3) Or even: - 720x304 = 2.37:1 (between 2.35:1 and 2.40:1)
720x384 = 1.87:1 (near as damn to 1.85:1)
720x400 = 1.80:1 (near as damn to 1.77:1 aka 16:9)
720x464 = 1.55:1 (aka 14:9)
720x544 = 1.32:1 (near as damn to 1.33:1 aka 4:3)
Cheers
