Codecs on clean install, ffdshow not working

hi. i just formated everything and started from the beginning simply becuase it's been a while and i wanted to sort out my codecs.

first hing i did was install all the applications like windvd and nero (including nerovision).

then i tried playing an avi file just to check that there are no codecs decoding them but the file tries to play. by try i mean it plays one frame every five seconds and nearly freezes the computer. mouse doesn't move until the next frame shows.

so i went to zoom player and under player options > formats it lists divx and xvid as "ERROR: No component found on the internal lists, playback for this item may fail." but it shows this in loads of others as well. the only other decoders listed there are intervideo (windvd).

is it safe to just unregister all the filters through zoom player? thus starting from scratch?

or is there a way i can find which decoder is playing the avi files at the moment?

Intervideo codecs tend to take over(badly) I read a few times.

I don't know Zoom at all, but if you can unregister the codecs through it, that ought to be fine, except that you might need them later for DVD playback
If they still try to decode DivX after you installed decent codecs, you can assign a lower merit to them (try Radlight filter manager), or you may as well uninstall WinDVD which is a big pile anyway. For now I don't think there is a need to fret.

You mention ffdshow in the title, but what's your problem with it exactly?

Well here's an update of what I’ve done.

I’ve installed windows XP slipstreamed with sp2. Updated it using windows update.

Then installed the latest NVIDIA drivers from their website.

Then I installed zoom player and ffdshow, tried an avi file and it played fine.

Set the display to full screen on TV out (so whenever a video is playing a full screen version is displayed on the TV) and the problem occurs. That is a frame shows every second and the mouse doesn't move smoothly like something's hogging the CPU.

So the problem is with the graphics card.

I’ve tried installing Omega drivers, same thing happens. I’ve installed NVIDIA beta drivers but same thing.

I’ve searched for ages on Google for this problem and I’m not the only one.

Problem is the problem is said to be either windows sp2 or the new NVIDIA drivers (apparently the old ones work). However, I can't uninstall sp2 because it's slipstreamed, (unless you can?) and I can't find anywhere to download the NVIDIA old drivers.

Nope, you can't. SP2 is a disease :p .I have the notion it would resist severe chemotherapy ;)

I left Nvidia about 18 months ago for ATI, so I can't help much more than that (last working drivers I had were the detonator 40.72 so you can see it dates back a while ;))

thankS! that worked. i've just installed the 56.72 drivers (the offficial ones out now are 66.93.

i think it's rediculous that i have to use older drivers on the most common operating system.

maybe i should have gone with ATI. i've only ever had matrox before and they worked flawlessly.

Hmmmph, same difference if you ask me, they all have their own issues...With Nvidia, once you have stable drivers, you need to make sure you keep them though :D (I remember that much, they've always had drivers issues that I know of)
