I can't seem to backup The Forgotten for the life of me...

I ran DVDdecrypter and made an ISO, mounted the ISO with daemon tools and have tried 3 times now to run it through DVDRB and it always stops at 78.8%!

I'm using the most recent public release of RB and haven't updated anything else in about 2 months now if that matters.

I'm not quite sure what kind of information you're going to need besides that so:

Another thing that may or may not be important is the fact that I'm doing this as a favor for a buddy of mine who can't seem to back it up with DVDShrink and he sais it always stops somewhere arround 14% for him...

Helps to read the version logs and yes, it matters. ;)

Version 0.73

Below is a summary of the changes/updates associated with this version (VIP release, non-VIP expected no later than Feb 28th, 2005):

- Added code to handle IFO cell table entries that reference sections of a VOB that is smaller than a cell (protection?) found on some recent DVDs (e.g. Resident Evil Apocalypse, The Forgotten). DVD-RB ensures the structure remains true to the original.

Unfortunately I can't confirm that fix works. I tried it a few days ago and received an Error #3 during rebuild just like I did with v0.72.

Has anyone with v0.73+ done it succesfully?

I got a complete encode after removing the previews with VOB Blanker. The theater version plays with no problems and the extended version plays with no problems form start to finish. If I play the extended version and skip to the "New" ending, I get the Video ok but the audio drops out.

Standard settings in RB 0.73 with CCE Basic

@crashwg

If you havent updated any software in the last couple months you probably dont have the newest dvd decrypter. I would get that and try re ripping and see if that doesnt help at all. So you havent dont any preprocessing right? If that is true then maybe try running it through dvd remake or something and see if that doesnt jar something loose and allow you to run in through rebuilder. Does RB mess up at 78 percent of the encode or of the rebuild step?

I haven't tried The Forgotten, but I just tackled error number 0003 by manually encoding a segment on a different disc with that error. You might check out this thread: 0003 error raises it's ugly head again (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89363)

If it is related, you might be able to figure out what segment(s) is being skipped in the encoding process, and encode it/them manually. That is assuming, and this may be a stretch, that the same problem exists with The Forgotten that existed with my Taxi Disc 1 0003 error. It's worth a look.

I'd love to get my hands on The Forgotten just to check this out!:)

Correction, I have infact updated Decrypter. Sorry, forgot that it checks for updates automatically...

Anyways, I think I'll just wait 'till the public release of DVDRB has a fix for it, it's not THAT important to me.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Its got that new sony copy protection that has invalid segments at the beginning.

I used shrink to do an uncompressed movie only then used RB to do the encode and it worked fine.

Wow really good sony copy protection huh? Beaten that easily.

The protection is just as good as their products. I've never owned a sony product thats lasted more then a year. Real crap but thats my own opinion.

Just remember: Opinions are like aholes, Everyones got one they all stink:)

Yea I know a guy at work that has had 2 sony computer monitors and they have both crapped out inside of a year.

Ok, well I am now trying to backup this movie and also got an error 3 overflow on the rebuild process. But then I used Special Error Processing and it got by the part where it was normally erroring. However I had to leave for work so im not sure if it finished totally or if it will play correctly. So my question is to jdobbs..> If I used special error processing would you suggest trying to redo the movie so I get no error, or if it rebuilds fine with special error processing on will it play just fine. Pretty much asking if this actually fixes the error or just makes rebuilder ignore it and keep rebuilding?

DVD43 ver 3.5.2 removes the copy protection (I rip it with DVD Decrypter with DVD43 3.5.2 on) in The Forgotten, I also got a successful copy after running it thru VobBlanker (straight rip with DVD Decrypter, then VobBlanker ). After both time DVD-RB had no problems.

WHAT's IN THE LATEST VERSION:
Version 3.5.2 now removes bad sectors that were purposely put on new DVDs to prevent copying. Movies like 'Resident Evil', 'Little Black Book', 'The Grudge', and 'The Forgotten' are protected with bad sectors. Version 3.5.2 has better bad sector detection, which fixes problems on version 3.5.0 and 3.5.1 which caused some movies to loose chapters or parts of the DVD.

So it sounds like rip with decrypter, then run through vob blanker OR rip with decrypter then run through dvd43. Either way results in a fine dvd rebuild with Rebuilder? I will have to give vob blanker a try on this disc.

yes to the first but, Rip with DVD Decrypter with DVD43 on at the same time. DVD43 is a free on-the-fly copy protection removel like AnyDVD. This way DVD43 is removing the protection (the bad sectors ) not DVD Decrypter, DVD Decrypter will say dvd not protected.

EDIT - I have even copied The Forgotten straight from the disc with DVD-RB and DVD43, no ripping with DVD Decrypter.

So is dvd decrypter not removing this protection? I was under the impression that it could handle these titles just fine. It seems like I shouldn't need another copy protection removal program... But hey if this is the way that works I suppose thats what I shall do.

Is there a way to do it without DVD-RB? I have DVD43 installed, and rip with DVD Decrypter, and DVD Shrink says the VIDEO_TS not a valid source.

Also, DVD Decrypter does something with this disc I've never seen - it is renaming the VOB files. Usually, if it's called "VTS_01_0.VOB" on the DVD, it's called the same thing on the hard drive (in file mode). But not now. This is with or without DVD43 in effect.

I will try IFO mode and see if that gets any better, but I don't think either DVD Shrink or Popcorn can handle IFO mode.

I also noticed something on this disc that is similar to a couple others... the default audio on the DVD is English but when it is ripped to the hard drive, the default is something else (in this case it's the director's commentary).

EDIT: I was able to rip this using MacTheRipper in full disc ARccOS mode, and then burn "just the main feature" to a DVD-R using Popcorn. Sorry, I know many of you don't have Macs but for those that do, you can try this.

According to a post in the ifo/vobeditors forum, i think you can use VobBlanker.

The funky structure is a side effect of arcoss but not the protection itself (the ifo structure will not cause a copy not to play which would be useless protection.) failure on structure protection would be the case with older versions of DD. (to give you a parallel.. smartripper still will completly fail on a arcoss disk). the newest version does get the data off the disk and the data is playable. now that the data is on your hd, making your favorite backup program shrink it to dvd5 size is another step. now obviously there is more dvddecrypter can do with it so our favorite backup programs like it, but thats above and beyond.. it is a 'dvd'-'decrypter' and its done that.

This is true, to be sure. DVD Decrypter is a fantastic tool and I love it. I just try to do as little preprocessing of the dvd as possible and this newest copy protection just makes it mandatory to do so. Oh well I dont mind, its not like its hard to do. I just thought that when dvd decrypter detected structure protection and inserted dummy files or whatever, that those files were valid and that the dvd files could then be shrunk down without worry. But this isnt the case. No big deal. There are plenty of tools to do the job. Just a matter of finding the best one for me. Plus there arent many dvd's with this protection. Is it not catching on? Is this the protection we can expect all dvd's to have in the near future. Or will it be that new standard Macrovision is making?

Firstly iam working with progs such as Decrypter V 3.5.4.0 and dvdrb v80 both up to date. I ripped the whole movie (THE FORGOTTEN) with succes through Decrypter. But once i start to encode the WHOLE movie CCE 2.70.02 sp encoder FREEZES at some point arround 63%!!As u will see in the logg down below i was forced to abort the procedure. The odd thing is i managed to encode and rebuild the whole thing after i first stripped the trailers through CloneDVD2 of the movie even though jDbobs adviced us not to do, so ive read somewhere!! Some1 mentiod of method in how to encode the whole movie throug dvdrebuilder without any probs by compile it first through dvdshrink uncompressed!! My question is, does that works flawless to avoid wotever problems through dvdrebuilder?? Also ive got a second MOVIE wichfrom i dont have the logg anymore namely THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. DVDRB encoded and rebuild the WHOLE movie (NOTHING STRIPPED) fine but at some point the movie freezes (NO LOOP just STILL IMAGE) in my standalone dvdplayer, to continue watching the movie i had to skipp the current chapter to bypass the freez!!!! IvE tried to run the DVD5 movie through dvdshrink uncompressed to solve the matter but no VAIL :sly: Now iam clueless in how to save the movie again:confused:

I hope this helps u guys and especialy jdobbs to further improve this OUTSTANDING PROGRAM;)

Here's the logg of THE INCOMPLETE FORGOTTEN if u like..

If any1 cares,
Ive just tried to save the movie with the frozen area. But it seems that an part of the movie is erased in that area, i only see GREY STILL IMAGE for like 7 minutes?? My guess is its beyond save. The only thing left for me to do is to cut out this area like the whole freakin 7 MINUTES:angry: and move on . Or is that infamous part hidden somehow?

If you read my post earlier on the first page, you would see how I got a success copy of The Forgotten... but in short DVD43 ver 3.5.2 removes the copy protection w/DVD Decrypter and VobBlanker removes the part that makes CCE freeze.... after that DVD-RB makes fine with any encoder.

firstly tnx for the long awaited post
Ive reread ur posts on page 1 to be sure to not overlook something wich could be usefull. But the thing, i only tried to figuring out why dvdshrink can handle those titles i spoke of pretty well strait from dvddecrypter without any use of additional software to bypass protections and not dvdrebuilder back then? There4 it must be an rebuilder issue, right? I mean, doesnt the drive also "decrypt" info in order to watch the movie strait from dvd-rom through lets say powerdvd/windvd? Cuz those specific greyed out parts in the movie only ocurs after iam done encoding/rebuilding it trhough rebuilder. I mean, b4 i finaly work on an title i always FIRST check the movies throug WINDVD and PoWERDVD to see if there r no abnormalities so of speak. And i didnt found the "greyed out area" b4 i worked on it. Iam currently using decrypter .3.5.4 and i like to know if ive got to check the setting "cycle tray after bad sectors" to have an clean/flawless rip of any protected movie with bad sectors in the future?
Oh, i also want to aks u if u could help me out to choose the right settings to make animated/CGI movies throug rebuilder? Last time when i tried to make "The incredibles" it turned out to be VERY BLOCKY, if u can follow me! I work with CCE 2.70.02.00 and rebuilder 0.84.beta. The 1 thing do know is that it has something to do wiht the VBR_BIAS AND Q PREC settings. Ive found an ECL TWEAKER arround here, but i dont know for sure if it supports cce 2.70.02? Although the program states to support cce 2.67"+", so i dont know for sure wot they mean with+? Is it up to only 2.69 or does it applies for all version?
I hope on a response soon.
