hi there
following a post i wrote on the ifoedit thread i am now moving it here.
In short - i have a film i captured with my artec dvb box and authored into DVD files using DVDauthor (through ProjectX and Mpeg2schnit). I have done it many times before and it works fine.
The last film i captured was a long one and the DVD files are larger the 4.8GB which obviously is too big for a DVD=R so i decided to use DVD rebuilder with CCE 2.5 to do the job. I did it twice once with ruibilder .70 and once with .72.
In both cases i ended up with a scrambled image as attached below.
The original DVD files play fine (both tested with PowerDVD). playing the m2v files in the D2vavs folder created by rebuilder shows the same scrambled image (with other players as well) but the AVS seemed to play fine (although didnt try to play it in the second try)
any ideas? I will try to use dvdshrink tommorow but oblviously prefer the quality of dvdrebuilder

cheers

I believe the problem is that some dvd recorders use the unusual resolution of 704x480 instead of the more common 720x480.

DVD-RB doesn't check and creates the .ecl files for 720, so CCE expects 720x input and when it gets a different resolution the scrambled picture is the result. There is at least one thread from many months ago on this issue. I don't recall if fixing the .ecl file before encoding worked or not.

Here's the thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79472&highlight=704).

The good news is the hack/fix works and its explained in detail in that thread. The bad news is it appears this problem wasn't fixed and I forgot to add it to the known issues list too.

sometimes you have to learn the hard way... :(

the advice was great and started encoding everything again after changing the width at the rebuilder.ecl to 704. After this finished realised there was a file called item.ecl which i dutyfully opened to realise that it also contained width at 720.
Tried one of the m2v files (there are 9 in the folder, all for the same film) it was scrambled. As it was allready post encoding that took over 4 hours on my humble PC i though i might as well try and rebuild it. the result is that the first ninth portion of the film plays fine but the rest is scrumbled...
so i set to encode again and realised that at the begining of encoding each segment/m2v file ir resets the item.ecl width to 720...
please help...

Item.ecl should just be a single job copied from REBUILDER.ecl, which contains all the jobs. Did you edit all instances of width=720 in REBUILDER.ecl or just the first one? If you only did the first one then only the first segment will be encoded correctly.

yes indeed been complete idiot - thought there will be only one point to fix in the ecl file... rencoding now and crossing fingers...

in the meantime thanks for the help, you all are very kind!
