View Full Version : Gordianknot v0.33.1 is extremely slow

Greetings,
Since I installed GK 0.33.1 I have an encoding DivX and Xvid speed problem. With my AthlonXP2100+ the speed with previous versions (ex 0.29.somewhat) was about 28-35 fps. :)
Recently I have done a new XP installation using a raid0 with 2 Maxtor10 HDs. The I downloaded GK 0.33.1 and relative codec-pack. With this new release of GK the encoding rate is is 2-7 fps.
Is there anyone that knows something I ignore, plesase help me?
PS: I don't have the older version of GK due to a broken HD and I cannot find it on the web.

Hello, and welcome to the forums-
I suppose there could be lots of reasons for that, but the first one that comes to my mind is a change in settings. For example, are you using XviD with VHQ=4, whereas before it was set at 1? That could be the cause of your problem all by itself. And there's an equivalent DivX setting (equivalent in the sense that it causes a massive slowdown in encoding speed), although I forget what it is.
So, for XviD, open VDubMod, and then go Video->Compression->XviD MPEG-4 Codec->Configure->Advanced Options->VHQ Mode, and see if it's set for 4. If so, change it back to 1, and you'll get your speed back. I guess you should also do the same thing through the GKnot XviD default codec settings.
But it's very possible that's not it, and there's something else causing it.

The VHQ is equal to 1 by default :( . So the problem is another. Any Ideas? Here I'm not undestanding anything  .

...a new XP installation...
Is your motherboard using a VIA chipset? If so, perhaps you forgot to install updated Hyperion 4-in-1 drivers?

No, I have a nForce2 Ultra Chipset, the drivers are installed; I have tried to install also the latest version, but no GK improvement results have come.:(

The Athlon Processor are in generaly encoding slower than P4, but encoding divx film you don't need such as raid_0, but separate the VOB files and encoded files(avi) in separate Disks, that can resulting a 15% better systeem performance. remember: the Power of Processor is very important in Divx/Xvid encoding, and second HD for better performance. if you enable Qpel, Gmc, and psycho options, can also slowdown the encoding time........(don't forget, in the option tab of Divx codec, don't choose the slowst encoding mode, standard mode is fine....)

I know it, but an AthlonXp 2100+ (1735 Mhz clock) can do more than 2-7 fps in Mpeg4 encoding. Two months ago, with GK 0.29.7 it was faster than it, more than 30 fps . I have tried using another disk, but the situation is the same and I'm waiting for the next version of GK. If this doesn't solve the problem, the problem is another.

Why dont you try the old version? So you could easily see if its an hardware issue or software malfunction.
Don't forget to delete the "registry keys" under options tab in GKnot
before uninstalling new version.
Bughunting can be so simple.....

I can't do it because simply I don't have the previous version. I think 0.29.7 is the best I ever had, so I tried to search a donwload through google, but I've got no result .
If there's someone that know a repository or a valid link, please tell me :o .

Do You mean 0.28.7 or 0.29.7??
If Athlon 2100+ with encoding frames 2-7, is really not ok, maybe you can reinstall it again, and delete register settings. Gordian Knot 0.33.1 working fine by my PC, do you check the Divx settings? Be sure the option " Encoding Performance" is not set to "Slow"? (default is "Standard" ).
if you are search for 0.28.7, here is the link: http://gordianknot.sourceforge.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownload&cid=1
Greetings.

Thanks, I'll try this afternoon :) (Italian afternoon)

With the older version (2.8.7) I've got an important speed up. In'm performing the 1st Xvid Encoding pass:
from 2-7 fps to 15-20 fps and virtualdub is more responsive. ;)
This is not as far as before but the speedup is great. Perhaps I have to re-install it changing the order of installation (1st the codecs and then the rippack) because I have to set the video dimension by hand. I need a second advice: installing one of the two packages I'm asked "Delete default codec settings? Yes/No" and so what's the best option? :o
After the 2nd pass is finished I'll post some comment about the quality of the job. :)

It's always good habit to start from scratch. So "Delete default codec settings" is always welcomed.
Just make sure at every time you do an uninstall and install procedure to press that little "red" knob suggesting to delete registry settings on the options tab first.
After a clean install go to the options tab again, set first and second pass of your encoders to their default values once. Exit and relaunch GKnot. Now change the settings to your desired values. Exit and relaunch again. Now you should be sure no myterious ghosts from the past are terrifying you :D
The speed difference between your old setup and the new one can be due to different XVID Versions - Make sure you are using the same one as in the past to make your comparisions. After fiddling around with different versions of codecs it's always good habit to redo the steps I mentioned above. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Also posting avs script generated by both versions of GK will help as well...

I've had to uninstall all another time, due to problems with video size in MB (requested 300 and 400 obtained) and the result is the file size is the right one but the encoding speed is 14-18 fps.
Now I'm doing another job to see if there are differences, but I seems stable on 14-18 fps. Posting an old avs of GK version 0.33.1 is not possible, but I can post one of the current version 0.28.7

This is really strange. After having problems during the afternoon I decided to uninstall also GK 0.28.7 using the advices of everyone to try the 0.33.1, and it works. Now I'm encoding @ 24-30 fps with XviD (1st pass), so the speed is no more problem  . Now I think everything is ok :D .
Thanks to all for supporting me, your advices have been really important. :D :D :D

I've been encoding at a really slow pace since I got into this as well. I have an IBM Thinkpad R40, with a 2.0GHz Celeron, 640MB DDR266, a 4200RPM 60GB HDD, and XP Home SP2...my 1st passes work around 15fps, but the second passes are going much slower, around 3-4fps. Does this sound about right for my machine, or is there some way for me to speed it up?
I'm using GK 0.34.8, the OGM container, and XviD encoding at around 75% of the comp check output.

Depends on how much filtering you use, but I sure can achieve much slower than that on my sempron 1.9 Ghz or around and 512 DDRam on poxy old sources..if no filtering is involved, well then it sounds a tad slow. I don't know about celerons though.
As well remember something simple like listening to music while encoding, watching a movie or any sort of multitasking knocks down the speed very roughly (about half for me)
