View Full Version : Why does my cpu only go to 75% during encoding?

Hello,
I just upgraded my computer to an overclocked xp2200 running at 2ghz to a p4 3.0E ghz and am not very impressed yet. The main reason I upgraded was the desire for faster encoding times. If there is a difference it's not very noticable. The one thing I am noticing though is the cpu is only running at around 70-75% during the encoding, whre the xp2200 ran at 100%. I tried chaning the priority to realtime but still 75% - what gives? I suspect it has something to do with the hyperthreading but I clicked on affinity and unchecked one of the cpu's with no help. Do I have some drivers installed incorrectly? I installed and reinstalled the 4in1 drivers as the board is a via Abit. Could it be that the cpu is slowing down to keep it from overheating? It runs at around 41 at idle but goes all the way to 55 during encoding. I am using the fan that came with it.

Also, I thought I might be able to capture in divx at 640x480 in divx running at 3ghz, Noop, drops frames just like before! I can capture in 480x480 but not anything higher in divx or xvid. Also, I installed dr divx 1.06 and when trying to capture with the hauppage wintv card (no encoder) it plays audio when I first click on audio and then stops even when I select linein. It works fine with composite but not with TVtuner. I suspect it might be an incompatibilty with the card as all other capture progs work fine.

Also, can anyone tell me how to capture with lame mp3? If I select lame as audio compression the resulting video file has no audio. If I capture with pcm it plays fine. If I open the captured file with gspot it shows mpeg layer 3 audio with compatible codecs but still doesn't play sound.
I've tried reinstallng the lame codec

hi and welcome to the forum,

yes the reason that you only get 75% cpu usage is that you have a hyperthreading CPU. don't worry though, although displayed otherwise you are still utilizing almost 100% of your cpu power...

imho deactivating HT won't speed up things, not noticably at least...

and i also do not think that the cpu is slowing you down, more likely it's slow ram or maybe a slow hard drive (wrong ide setup?!)

oh and i wouldn't really recommend capturing to lame...

Thanks for the reply. What mp3 codec would you recommend? If I use the frauhofer one it will play, but only encodes at a max 22khz and that's not compatible with my dsm-320 media player. I am looking for something I can encode in mp3 at 44.1khz. I'm not sure what mp3 Dr divx uses when it encodes a file but that does play. However, for some reason I can't capture aduio with it coming from my tuner, only with composite and line in. Encoding a file with it works fine though.
