best app for ogm? recommend one please?

Hi all

I've been out of the ripping scene for a bit since the purchase of my dvd burner over a year ago. However lately, backing up tv series has become a pain and I've been trying to physically reduce the need to have 6-8dvds per series and go back to my old ways of converting to xvid again so that i can fit it all into one DVD)... Plus I also like stock piling on whole series on me media center (modified xbox with 200gb hdd) so I can keep them handy for later viewing.

As i've been out of the scene for a fair while, I've done some research and found that the OGM container fits my requirements (please correct me if i'm wrong):
- holds xvid video good
- multiple audio streams
- multiple subtitles

and would like the tool for windows system pref...possibly linux (still learning it)

I guess that the best way to do is:
1. DVD decrypt to rip
2. Auto GK, create XVID video with main audio track
3. besweet to convert other audio file (eg directors commentary?)
4. XXXX tool to format subtitles
5. XXXX tool to put it all into one OGM container.

My questions:
- can someone suggest some tools to possibly automate this process as much as poss?
- cane someone fill in the XXXX for tools to use for that part of the process
- Other sites to get more info on how best to use the OGM? Google seems to be less then helpful on the matter
- any other ideas or comments?

Yes subrip is great for subs. But you can also use AVIMuxGUI to output the OGM.

But I have to ask the question. Have you looked at matroska? It will do everything that OGM does and more. Not to mention it is still actively supported and developed for. And when you are talking Linux tools at least in my experience OGM is rather rare there. Matroska being more common.

Matroska works great, just gotta play around with it by looks of things.

Now I have another query on which tools to use for actually encoding,
I've noticed that there's robot4rip as well, is this better then Auto GK?

which is better for automating the whole process ?

Are we talking about alexnoe's AVIMux GUI here? Coz if one app will never support OGM it is that one. Well, that and notepad :rolleyes:... VirtualDubMod works fine for OGM though...

anyway, for subtitles you can also use VSrip and keep the original DVD subtitles (if you keep using Matroska). Don't know if subrip supports outputting .idx/.sub files...

For conversion GK or AutoGK is probably used by most people...

I've been playing around and tried the following
1. robot4rip - to create the subtitles, ogg audio and chapters.
2. AutoGk - encode the xvid from the vob files with no audio/subtitling specified.
3. VirtualDubMod - to combine all the above to a Matroska file

I can get the different audio and chapters to work, however I'm getting some probs:
- AutoGK doesn't seem to one to encode to my any where near my specified
file size eg I specified 270mb at a reduced width res of 512 and the file comes out 111mb (with the obvious poo quality)
- Can't seem to put in the subtitles created by robot4rip, is there another step or piece of kit for this step? maybe some kinda conversion software?

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hmmmmmm. Well I don't use *GK myself. I AVS script by hand etc. But perhaps it is something in the codec config. Have you tweaked any settings? Perhaps go into the codec config and tell it to restore defaults? I can't say for sure how much of the codec AGK configures or does not.

so I've been playing around with the different setups and.....wow.
The xvid codec has advanced so much since i last used it!

Anyways after having a slight problem with robot4rip with the programs being in different directories (any chance of update for us ignorant newbies?) I've gone back to good ol normal GK.

However I'm still really confused about the subtitle output from r4r.
As r4r gives out the .idx .sub which I can't seem to mux into the Matroska file. Virtualdubmod only seemds to recognise .srt and doesn't reconised the .idx and .sub. After then using mkvmerge and then using mplayerc and bsplayer, it doesn't seem to recognise it!
Can some one point me in the right direction for this. Am I suppose to use another program to create or convert subtitles?

In mkvmerge it says it supports .sub at the command line but doens't display on the two players i used.

the subs should play with VSfilter installed...

or try Media Player Classic, that should work with .sub/.idx too, if you enable VMR7 or 9 in the options menu.

I figured out that changing the file name impacts the subtitling.

What I wanted was to try and get sub titles to work now with it embedded into the matroska container rather then having lots of files flying around. actually just realised the subjct of this thread has changed some what since the beginning :)

use mkvmerge to mux the *.sub/*.idx into matroska. VDM doesnt do that, as you stated right.

Alternatively you can use subrip to OCR the *.sub/*.idx into srt or ssa textsubs (just do like you would with a DVD, but select the IDX in the dialog where you normally select a IFO file)

Just to reiterate the point, I just want the files to be ideally able to play on my current media center (ie my xbox xbmc).

the least work is no OCR at all, just mux the sub/idx ..but i think they look pretty bad so i always OCR them to text. Whether SRT or SSA ? depends what you want.. if you don't want to add font styles and such SRT is quick easy and probably more sure to play on something (i don't know what xbox is capable of..). If you want to set font, color and such use SSA - but if you do you cannot so easily change these on-the-fly on playback as you can with SRT.
